Optimizing essential oil, fatty acid profiles, and phenolic compounds of dragon's head (Lallemantia iberica) intercropped with chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) with biofertilizer inoculation under rainfed conditions in a semi-arid region

Fatemeh Zamani et al.

Summary: This study assessed the effect of biofertilizers on dragon's head cultivation under rainfed conditions and found that the most sustainable combination was the 2D:1Ch intercropping pattern with bacterial biofertilizer (BI) application. This combination improved seed yield, essential oil concentration, fatty acid profile, and phenolic compound content, making it a sustainable strategy for dragon's head cultivation and essential oil production.

Options for diversifying agricultural systems to reduce pesticide use: Can we learn from nature?

Wopke van der Werf et al.

Summary: Increasing crop diversity can be an important and obvious first step towards more natural pest control, but it is not a silver bullet solution. Adopting a wider definition of integrated pest management (IPM) and including the environmental stewardship role of agriculture can enhance the use of natural mechanisms for pest control, but would also require an economic mechanism to reward stewardship that serves wider societal needs.

Mixture x Genotype Effects in Cereal/Legume Intercropping

Dereje T. Demie et al.

Summary: Cropping system diversification through annual intercropping has potential to reduce fertilizer and pesticide inputs. Genotype choice affects intercrop performance in cereal/legume intercropping systems, with differences in phenological and morphological traits explaining variations in mixture performance. Future research should consider additional factors such as phenology, root growth, soil nutrient acquisition, and weed and disease effects to improve understanding of genotype effects in intercropping.

Effect of Intercropping and Bio-Fertilizer Application on the Nutrient Uptake and Productivity of Mung Bean and Marjoram

Vahid Mohammadzadeh et al.

Summary: The intercropping of marjoram and mung bean, especially at the O/45MB ratio, along with the application of biofertilizer, showed positive effects on both quantity and quality of essential oil. The highest content of N, P, and K in marjoram and mung bean was observed in the intercropped O/30MB and O/45MB treatments. The use of biofertilizer significantly increased the land equivalent ratio (LER) in the O/15MB treatment, indicating that intercropping required 59% less area to achieve the same yield as monocropping. Moreover, the highest content of carvacrol, p-cymene, and carvacrol methyl ether was obtained in the O/45MB treatment under biofertilizer application.

The effect of exogenously applied plant growth regulators and zinc on some physiological characteristics and essential oil constituents of Moldavian balm (Dracocephalum moldavica L.) under water stress

Esmaeil Rezaei-Chiyaneh et al.

Summary: The cost-effective exogenous application of antioxidants like salicylic acid and ascorbic acid, along with essential micronutrient elements such as Zn, can mitigate the harmful effects of drought stress. Foliar spraying of SA and AA reduced the negative impacts of moderate and severe drought stress, while Zn application to well-watered plants resulted in the highest biomass yield. Drought stress decreased plant biomass and essential oil content, while enzymatic antioxidant activities and total soluble sugars and proline contents increased. SA-treated plants had higher geraniol and geranial content under moderate water stress, while Zn-treated plants had more geranyl acetate under severe water stress.
