Aerodynamic simulation of effects of one- and two-side windbreak walls on a moving train running on a double track railway line subjected to strong crosswind

Jiqiang Niu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aerodynamic performance of high-speed trains under crosswinds, and found that windbreak walls significantly reduced aerodynamic forces and fluctuations, with one-side windbreak walls being more effective in suppressing aerodynamic fluctuations.

Effects of embankment layouts on train aerodynamics in a wind tunnel configuration

Wenhui Li et al.

Summary: The study focused on crosswind stability of trains running on an embankment, using different embankment layouts in wind tunnel simulations. Results showed that aerodynamic coefficients of leading vehicles on the leeward track decreased rapidly with the extending length of the upstream embankment. Certain scenarios underestimated aerodynamic coefficients compared to more realistic scenarios, indicating the importance of considering finite-length embankments in wind tunnel tests for determining running safety.

Unsteady Aerodynamic Characteristics of a High-Speed Train Induced by the Sudden Change of Windbreak Wall Structure: A Case Study of the Xinjiang Railway

Zheng-Wei Chen et al.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of sudden windbreak transition on high-speed trains through flow structural analysis and a multibody system dynamic model. The results show that the head car is most affected, mainly due to the unreasonable structure shape and inadequate height of the windbreak in the transition region.

Sudden flow induced by mountain ridges beside windbreaks in a railway and its mitigation measures

Zhengwei Chen et al.

Summary: This paper studies the impact of a mountain ridge on wind speed distribution and flow structures along a railway under crosswinds. Mitigation measures are proposed based on the observed deterioration mechanism, and the effects of these measures are compared to determine the preferred scheme. The results show that the implementation of mitigation measures can effectively decrease wind speed, and a specific distance is recommended for ensuring the safety of trains.

Aerodynamic performance and dynamic behaviors of a train passing through an elongated hillock region beside a windbreak under crosswinds and corresponding flow mitigation measures

Zhengwei Chen et al.

Summary: The aerodynamic and dynamic behaviors of a train near an elongated hillock beside a windbreak under crosswind were analyzed, revealing the sudden impact of the elongated hillock on the train and proposing a mitigation measure. A certain distance from the windbreak could effectively reduce the impact on the train.

On the influence of Reynolds number and ground conditions on the scaling of the aerodynamic drag of trains

Jonathan Tschepe et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential transfer of drag measurement results from reduced-scale train models to full-scale vehicles through experimental and numerical analysis. The research highlights the significant impact of ground conditions and three-dimensional effects on the aerodynamic drag of trains, while also noting the challenges in determining skin friction drag due to factors like surface roughness. Additionally, the study explores the effects of elements mounted on the train roof under different upstream flow conditions and proposes a scaling method for transferring drag results from model-scale to full-scale trains.

Full-scale tests of unsteady aerodynamic loads and pressure distribution on fast trains in crosswinds

Hongrui Gao et al.

Summary: This study conducted full-scale tests to investigate the influence of crosswinds on the aerodynamic loads of a fast streamlined train. The results showed that the mean values of aerodynamic load coefficients increased and then decreased with the yaw angle, reaching maximum values between 54.5 degrees and 59.6 degrees. The coefficients of variation of the aerodynamic load coefficients were approximately twice the turbulence intensity, indicating that the fluctuations were caused by wind speed oscillations. The dominant frequencies of the aerodynamic load coefficients were found to be at Strouhal numbers of 0-0.4.
