Vaccination of cattle with synthetic peptides corresponding to predicted extracellular domains of Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus aquaporin 2 reduced the number of ticks feeding to repletion

Glen A. Scoles et al.

Summary: Vaccination with antibodies against RmAQP2 can reduce the number of cattle fever ticks on cattle, but the mechanism of action has not been confirmed. Further research is needed to determine the mechanism and whether these vaccine targets can be effective components of an anti-tick vaccine cocktail.

Serpins in Tick Physiology and Tick-Host Interaction

First Data on Ornithodoros moubata Aquaporins: Structural, Phylogenetic and Immunogenic Characterisation as Vaccine Targets

Ricardo Perez-Sanchez et al.

Summary: This study identified and characterized seven aquaporins (AQPs) expressed by Ornithodoros moubata (OmAQPs), a tick species that transmits African swine fever and human relapsing fever. Six of the OmAQPs were aquaglyceroporins, while one was a water-specific aquaporin. These OmAQPs were found to be expressed in the salivary glands and midgut, with a few expressed in the coxal glands. Analysis of epitope exposure identified three extracellular domains in each AQP, making them potential vaccine targets.

Bioinformatic Analysis of Ixodes ricinus Long Non-Coding RNAs Predicts Their Binding Ability of Host miRNAs

Jose Maria Medina et al.

Summary: This study provides an exhaustive analysis of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in Ixodes ricinus ticks, revealing their stable expression and diverse biological roles related to tick-host interaction. The findings highlight the importance of incorporating data from different sources to generate a solid reference set of lncRNAs and suggest the possibility of lncRNAs acting as host miRNA sponges in tick-host interaction.

Ticks and antibodies: May parasite density and tick evasion influence the outcomes following immunization protocols?

Bruna Ferreira Leal et al.

Summary: Ticks pose a significant threat to human health and livestock globally, prompting the development of vaccines against these ectoparasites. While antibody responses have been a focal point of evaluation, controversies persist over the potential roles of humoral responses in tick-mammalian host relationships. Additionally, considerations about antibody evasion mechanisms by ticks and variable levels of resistance in different parasite densities are pertinent in testing vaccine candidates.

Ricardo Perez-Sanchez et al.

Summary: The salivary glands of Ornithodoros erraticus were analyzed to identify potential antigen candidates for tick vaccines. Most salivary gene expression occurred during the first 7 days after feeding, with certain protein families showing increased abundance post-feeding, related to blood feeding and regulation of host immune responses.

Summary: This study identified a variety of tick species infesting dairy cattle in Nairobi, Kenya, along with the pathogens they carry, including emerging species like Rhipicephalus microplus. These ticks harbored DNA of Rickettsia and Ehrlichia, highlighting potential health concerns for both animals and humans. Effective tick control strategies are crucial to prevent diseases associated with these pathogens.
