Recent developments on luminescent octahedral transition metal cluster complexes towards biological applications

Kaplan Kirakci et al.

Summary: Over the past decades, the luminescent octahedral molybdenum, tungsten, and rhenium cluster complexes with the general formula [{M6Li8}La6]n have gained significant attention for their potential applications in photofunctional materials design. These complexes exhibit red phosphorescence with high quantum yields, sensitivity to oxygen, and production of singlet oxygen, O2(1Dg). The wide range of ligands allows for precise tuning of their physico-chemical, photophysical, and biological properties for various applications such as photodynamic therapy and photoinactivation of bacteria.

The role of hydrolysis in biological effects of molybdenum cluster with DMSO ligands

Ekaterina Pronina et al.

Summary: Biological applications of octahedral molybdenum cluster complexes are complicated by their hydrolytic instability, but hydrolysis process can be used as an important tool for regulating specific biological effects. In this study, it was found that the luminescence and biological properties of the unstable cluster complex changed with the degree of hydrolysis, with the aged solution showing lower dark cytotoxicity and higher cellular uptake.

Stabilization of Octahedral Metal Halide Clusters by Host-Guest Complexation with γ-Cyclodextrin: Toward Nontoxic Luminescent Compounds

Anton A. Ivanov et al.

Summary: Gamma-cyclodextrin interacts with octahedral halide clusters to form robust inclusion supramolecular complexes. The conformational organization of the adduct varies depending on the nature of the inner halide. The complexation significantly enhances the hydrolytic stability of the clusters and shows promising horizons for their application in biology.
