ISSLS PRIZE in Clinical Science 2022: Epidemiology, risk factors and clinical impact of juvenile Modic changes in paediatric patients with low back pain

G. Michael Mallow et al.

Summary: Contrary to traditional beliefs, this study found that Modic changes (MC) and their types can also occur in young pediatric patients. The presence of MCs was associated with degenerative disc/endplate abnormalities and structural spine phenotypes. Children with MCs had prolonged symptom duration.

Ex vivo biomechanical evaluation of Acute lumbar endplate injury and comparison to annulus fibrosus injury in a rat model

Dalin Wang et al.

Summary: This study established an ex-vivo rat lumbar endplate injury model and characterized the effects of endplate injury on motion segment biomechanical properties. Compared to annulus fibrosus injury, endplate injury had the greatest impact on axial biomechanical properties, while annulus fibrosus injury primarily affected torsional properties.

Development of a standardized histopathology scoring system for intervertebral disc degeneration in rat models: An initiative of the ORS spine section

Alon Lai et al.

Summary: A new histology grading system was developed to quantify intervertebral disc (IVD) degeneration in different rat models, consisting of eight significant degenerative features. The validation study showed high reproducibility and ability to discern different levels of degenerative changes. A widely-accepted protocol for histological preparation of rat IVD samples was proposed to facilitate comparison across laboratories.

Role of Microglia and Astrocytes in Spinal Cord Injury Induced Neuropathic Pain

Gurwattan S. Miranpuri et al.

Summary: Spinal cord injuries result in varied symptoms, with neuropathic pain being a common and debilitating condition. Current understanding and treatment of SCINP face obstacles, but pharmacological interventions targeting glial cells and astrocytes show promise. Research in this area could provide new directions for SCINP alleviation.
