Receptome profiling identifies KREMEN1 and ASGR1 as alternative functional receptors of SARS-CoV-2

Yunqing Gu et al.

Summary: The study identified ASGR1 and KREMEN1 as alternative functional receptors for SARS-CoV-2, in addition to ACE2, which together play essential roles in virus entry. The combination of these receptors affects virus susceptibility across different cell types and displays a stronger correlation with virus susceptibility when expressed together. In human lung organoids, a cocktail of antibodies targeting these three receptors provides the most significant blockage of SARS-CoV-2 infection when compared to individual antibodies.

A comprehensive account of SARS-CoV-2 genome structure, incurred mutations, lineages and COVID-19 vaccination program

Vijay Rani Rajpal et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of COVID-19 onset, SARS-CoV-2 genome architecture, emergence of novel viral lineages, and the development of vaccines. The continuously evolving SARS-CoV-2 has acquired a larger number of mutations, leading to increased transmission, pathogenesis, and immune escape potential. These mutations have also resulted in reduced efficacy of vaccines and antibodies currently in use. Therefore, there is a need for developing next-generation vaccines and therapeutics targeting more conservative genomic regions for adequate protection.

An experimental test of the nicotinic hypothesis of COVID-19

Nicole E. Godellas et al.

Summary: Although the hypothesis suggests that nicotinic acetylcholine receptors may act as additional receptors for SARS-CoV-2, the experiments show that this binding is unlikely to be a relevant aspect of COVID-19.

Nicotinic cholinergic system and COVID-19: In silico identification of interactions between α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor and the cryptic epitopes of SARS-Co-V and SARS-CoV-2 Spike glycoproteins

George Lagoumintzis et al.

Summary: Smokers have lower likelihood of being diagnosed with or hospitalized for COVID-19, but face higher odds for adverse outcomes once hospitalized. The interaction between SARS-CoV-2 Spike glycoprotein and human alpha 7 nAChR involves toxin-like sequences and binding sites, which may have implications for potential therapeutic strategies.

A potential interaction between the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein and nicotinic acetylcholine receptors

A. Sofia F. Oliveira et al.

Summary: Recent studies suggest that the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 may interact with nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, potentially impacting pathogenicity and infectivity. The Y674-R685 region of the spike protein shows affinity for nAChRs, with different conformational behaviors depending on the receptor subtype.

Attributes and predictors of long COVID

Carole H. Sudre et al.

Summary: Reports on long-lasting COVID-19 symptoms, known as 'long COVID', are increasing. Analysis of data from over 4,000 COVID-19 cases revealed that long COVID is more common in older individuals, those with higher body mass index, and females. Experiencing more than five symptoms in the first week of illness was associated with long COVID. A simple model showed promise in distinguishing between short and long COVID cases early in the disease.

Smoking prevalence among hospitalized COVID-19 patients and its association with disease severity and mortality: an expanded re-analysis of a recent publication

Summary: This study revealed an unusually low prevalence of smoking among hospitalized COVID-19 patients, with no significant association found between smoking and disease severity but also no statistically significant link between smoking and mortality. Smokers are advised to quit due to long-term health risks, while exploring pharmaceutical nicotine and other nicotinic cholinergic agonists as potential therapeutic options.
