PbANK facilitates the long-distance movement of the PbWoxT1-PbPTB3 RNP complex by degrading deposited callose

Shengyuan Wang et al.

Summary: Grafting horticultural crops can cause phenotypic changes in the grafted materials due to the movement of macromolecular signals. This study identified a protein called PbANK, which interacts with PbPTB3 to facilitate its transport through the phloem alongside PbWoxT1 mRNA. Additionally, PbANK was found to increase the efficiency of cell-to-cell movement by degrading callose.

Overexpression of a Monodehydroascorbate Reductase Gene from Sugar Beet M14 Increased Salt Stress Tolerance

Jinna Li et al.

Summary: Monodehydroascorbate reductase (MDHAR) plays a crucial role in maintaining the level of ascorbic acid in plant cells by reducing monodehydroascorbate (DHA) to ascorbic acid (AsA) and regulating cellular redox homeostasis. Constitutive expression of BvM14-MDHAR in Arabidopsis thaliana enhances salt stress tolerance, with transgenic plants showing longer roots, higher fresh weight and chlorophyll contents, as well as increased AsA/DHA levels compared to wild-type seedlings under salt stress. Overexpression of BvM14-MDHAR also leads to higher activities of MDHAR and dehydroascorbate reductase (DHAR) and reduced cell membrane damage in response to salt stress, highlighting its potential as a target for genetic engineering and molecular breeding efforts to enhance crop salt stress tolerance.

Intracellular mRNA transport and localized translation

Sulagna Das et al.

Summary: High-resolution imaging technologies have revealed that all living organisms localize mRNAs in subcellular compartments, creating translation hotspots for locally tuning gene expression. Understanding the mechanisms of mRNA transport and local translation is crucial for precise temporal and spatial control of gene expression in response to intracellular and environmental cues. The technological developments in detecting mRNA localization and local translation provide valuable tools for studying gene expression regulation.

Sphingolipid long-chain base hydroxylation influences plant growth and callose deposition in Physcomitrium patens

Jasmin Goemann et al.

Summary: Research on sphingolipids in plant plasma membranes suggests that hydroxyl groups in long-chain base moieties play a crucial role in interactions with sterols during microdomain formation. Mutants lacking LCB C-4 hydroxylase S4H in Physcomitrium patens exhibit global changes in sphingolipid composition, highlighting the importance of S4H in the development of nonvascular plants. Physcomitrium patens serves as a valuable model for studying the diversification of plant sphingolipids due to its simple anatomy which facilitates visualization of physiological processes in biological membranes.
