Microbial fuel cell scale-up options: Performance evaluation of membrane (c-MFC) and membrane-less (s-MFC) systems under different feeding regimes

Xavier Alexis Walter et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance and efficiency of ceramic microbial fuel cells (c-MFCs) and self-stratifying microbial fuel cells (s-MFCs) under similar feeding conditions were compared. The results showed that c-MFCs displayed constant performance independently from the hydraulic retention time (HRT) and had high energy conversion efficiency at longer HRT. On the other hand, the performance of s-MFCs was correlated with HRT, with the best performance achieved under short HRT. However, the energy conversion efficiency of s-MFCs remained constant regardless of HRT.

An innovative model for biofilm-based microfluidic microbial fuel cells

Tiancheng Ouyang et al.

Summary: Microfluidic microbial fuel cells exhibit higher performance and energy efficiency compared to traditional ones due to their co-laminar flow characteristic and micro-scale structure. A three-dimensional numerical model was developed and validated to investigate the effects of various parameters on cell performance. Simulation results showed the non-linear performance trend and substrate inhibition phenomenon in microfluidic microbial fuel cells.

CNT-motor driven by competition between thermal fluctuation and REF

Kun Cai et al.

Summary: Rotary nanomotors are essential components in nanomachines. This study proposes a carbon nanotube (CNT)-based nanomotor driven by two methods: inwardly radial deviation (IRD) atoms and rotating electric field (REF). Molecular dynamic simulations show that the stable rotational frequency (SRF) of the rotor depends on factors such as blade size, REF frequency, and IRD atom number.

Water transport behaviors in a CTT-type nanotube system

Kun Cai et al.

Summary: The shape of a nanochannel is crucial for mass transport. This study proposes a new nanochannel model called concentric-twin tube (CTT), which can be created by inserting a carbon nanotube (CNT) into another identical CNT. The CTT has a stable configuration with three subchannels of different cross-sectional shapes. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal that the (17,17) CNT-based CTT is the thinnest nanochannel for water transport. The three subchannels of the CTT exhibit different linear speeds of water and volume flow rates depending on their cross-sectional shapes. These characteristics enable the design of fluid nanodevices with special transformation performances, such as sieving molecules of different sizes in a solution.

Machine learning for reparameterization of four-site water models: TIP4P-BG and TIP4P-BGT

Hong-fei Ye et al.

Summary: Parameterizing an effective water model is challenging due to the need to balance diverse physical properties with a limited number of parameters. Machine learning, specifically using neural networks, provides a promising approach to optimize the model parameters efficiently. In this study, a large number of molecular dynamics simulations were conducted on the TIP4P water model, and a data-driven machine learning procedure was shown to be effective in establishing accurate mappings between model parameters and key physical properties of water, resulting in well-balanced models with small errors compared to experimental values.
