Deficient copper availability on organoleptic and nutritional quality of tomato fruit

Maria Teresa Lafuente et al.

Summary: Copper deficiency affects the micronutrient contents and nutritional value of tomato fruits. Lower copper levels and changes in other micronutrients occurred in response to Cu deficiency during fruit ripening stages, leading to delayed color change and increased acidity in the fruits. Cu deficiency also increased antioxidant capacity and vitamin C content, as well as total phenolic and flavonoid contents in green fruits.

The ester derivatives of ferulic acid exhibit strong inhibitory effect on the growth of Alternaria alternata in vitro and in vivo

Hui Kong et al.

Summary: This study explored the antifungal activity of ferulic acid and its derivatives against Alternaria alternata, the principal pathogen causing postharvest black spot disease of Korla pear. The results showed that the derivatives exhibited stronger inhibitory effects on the fungal growth and reduced the development of black spot disease. The underlying inhibitory mechanisms were found to be the damage to the fungal cell membranes. The derivatives, particularly ethyl ferulate, showed promising potential as green substitutes for controlling the disease.

Melanin synthesis gene Aapks contributes to appressorium formation, stress response, cell well integrity and virulence in Alternaria alternata

Rong Li et al.

Summary: The polyketide synthase gene (Aapks) in Alternaria alternata plays a crucial role in melanin synthesis, response to stresses, infection structure formation, and pathogenicity. A study showed that AAapks mutant lacked melanin production, exhibited reduced sporulation and abnormal morphology. The mutant strain also showed hypersensitivity to cell wall and oxidant stress factors, and had delayed infection structure formation. The virulence of AAapks strain was reduced in both wound-inoculated pear fruit and non-wound-inoculated tobacco leaves. These findings highlight the vital regulatory role of Aapks in A. alternata.

Kirti Singh et al.

Summary: This study synthesized silver nanoparticles using green synthesis and developed a silver nanoparticle acticoat by incorporating them into carrageenan for wound healing. The acticoat showed excellent antibacterial properties and promoted wound healing and collagen deposition. The in vivo studies demonstrated its potential application in burn, accidental, and diabetic wound infections.

Use of Copper-Based Fungicides in Organic Agriculture in Twelve European Countries

Lucius Tamm et al.

Summary: The reduction and eventual phasing out of copper-based plant-protection products is a top priority in European policy and organic agriculture. A survey was conducted to provide an overview of the current use of these products in European organic agriculture and the need for alternatives. The survey combined expert knowledge and statistics on pesticide use to estimate the consumption of copper in organic agriculture in 12 European countries. The results showed that approximately 3258 t of copper is consumed per year, which is 52% of the permitted annual dosage. The main crops contributing to this consumption are olives, grapevine, and almonds. More than half of the allowed cases involve farmers using less than half of the permitted amount. Completely abandoning copper fungicides at present would result in significant yield losses. To reduce or avoid copper use, preventive strategies need to be fully implemented, breeding programs intensified, and affordable alternative products brought to the market.

Biocontrol potential of mycogenic copper oxide nanoparticles against Alternaria brassicae

Swati Gaba et al.

Summary: The biological synthesis of copper oxide nanoparticles using Trichoderma asperellum cultures was studied in this research. The nanoparticles exhibited antifungal potential against the pathogen Alternaria brassicae and showed promise as an alternative to fungicides. The characterization of the nanoparticles was done using spectroscopic and microscopic techniques.

Fungicide application can intensify clay aggregation and exacerbate copper accumulation in citrus soils

Trang T. Dao et al.

Summary: The use of fungicides can increase copper accumulation in soil, with Cu released from fungicides associating with soil clay and promoting their mutual aggregation, potentially intensifying copper accumulation. However, the effects of fungicides on clay dynamics are obscured by the overwhelming effect of Cu2+, which appears as the most active agent in promoting clay aggregation.

Combined treatments of chitosan and sodium silicate to inhibit Alternaria alternata pathogens of postharvest winter jujube

Jingru Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that the combination of chitosan and sodium silicate can effectively inhibit the infection of jujube fruit by Alternaria alternata fungus. Experimental results show that this combined treatment not only inhibits the growth and spread of the fungus, but also damages the structure and membrane integrity of the fungus cells, thereby delaying the development of fruit decay.

Towards resolution of antibacterial mechanisms in metal and metal oxide nanomaterials: a meta-analysis of the influence of study design on mechanistic conclusions

Eva Albalghiti et al.

Summary: This study reveals that there is uncertainty and disagreement about the antibacterial mechanisms of metal and metal oxide engineered nanomaterials, largely due to differences in study design, exposure conditions, and experimental methods. Researchers reported both positive and negative conclusions regarding the antibacterial activity mechanisms for different core compositions. Assumptions about which mechanisms predominate for a given composition may influence study design and conclusions.
