Functional Assessment of Stroke-Induced Regulation of miR-20a-3p and Its Role as a Neuroprotectant

Taylor E. Branyan et al.

Summary: The study identifies miR-20a-3p as a potential therapeutic for stroke and reveals different expression levels of this microRNA in astrocytes of different genders and age groups. Results show that miR-20a-3p has more neuroprotective effects when expressed in neurons, and intravenous injections of miR-20a-3p mimic significantly improve stroke outcomes.

Extracellular Vesicles from Human Cerebrospinal Fluid Are Effectively Separated by Sepharose CL-6B-Comparison of Four Gravity-Flow Size Exclusion Chromatography Methods

Vedrana Krusic Alic et al.

Summary: Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are cell-secreted membranous nanoparticles present in body fluids with great diagnostic potential. This study compared four types of size exclusion chromatography (SEC) techniques to isolate EVs from the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of patients with severe traumatic brain injury. It was found that Sepharose CL-6B was the most effective method for isolating EVs from CSF and separating them from lipoproteins.

miR-451a Regulates Neuronal Apoptosis by Modulating 14-3-3ζ-JNK Axis upon Flaviviral Infection

Surajit Chakraborty et al.

Summary: In this study, the role of miRNA in promoting flavivirus-induced neuronal apoptosis was evaluated. It was found that miR-451a promotes neuronal cell death by targeting the 14-3-3 zeta protein. This discovery provides a potential therapeutic target for improving disease outcomes in flavivirus-induced encephalitis.

Systematic Review of the Diagnostic and Clinical Utility of Salivary microRNAs in Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)

Matthew I. Hiskens et al.

Summary: This systematic review investigates the diagnostic or prognostic ability of microRNAs extracted from saliva in traumatic brain injury (TBI). Early data suggests that salivary microRNAs may assist with TBI diagnosis, but further research with consistent methods and larger patient populations is necessary to evaluate their diagnostic and prognostic potential.

MicroRNA-223 Attenuates Stretch-Injury-Induced Apoptosis in Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells by Regulating RhoB Expression

Yingliang Liu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the protective effect of miR-223 on brain microvascular endothelial cells (BMECs) after stretch injury (SI). The results demonstrated that miR-223 can alleviate SI-induced apoptosis of BMECs, and this anti-apoptotic effect is partially achieved by inhibiting the expression of RhoB. Moreover, miR-223 may play a role in maintaining the integrity of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) during traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Yelena G. Bodien et al.

Summary: The study found that the Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) total score may not accurately reflect level of consciousness and various Disorders of Consciousness (DoC) diagnoses could be associated with different GCS total scores. To improve classification of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients and inform future clinical trials, clinicians and investigators should consider individual subscale behaviors and more comprehensive assessments when evaluating TBI severity.

Enrichment of the erythrocyte miR-451a in brain extracellular vesicles following impairment of the blood-brain barrier

Nasser Nassiri Koopaei et al.

Summary: Extracellular RNAs, including miRNA, are present in biofluids and are stabilized by being bound within ribonucleoprotein complexes or packaged into extracellular vesicles (EVs). This study revealed that under conditions of a disrupted blood-brain barrier, EVs and their contents can be transferred from the peripheral circulation to the central nervous system.
