Cytotoxicity of Metal Ions Released from NiTi and Stainless Steel Orthodontic Appliances, Part 1: Surface Morphology and Ion Release Variations

Mirna Petkovic Didovic et al.

Summary: No clear conclusions can be drawn on ion release from orthodontic appliances due to complex interrelations of multiple factors. This study investigated the morphological and chemical changes of four parts of a fixed orthodontic appliance and analyzed the ion release profiles using SEM/EDX and ICP-MS techniques. The results showed variations in surface morphologies among different parts of the appliance and observed differences in ion release. SEM/EDX proved to be less sensitive than ICP-MS in detecting ion release.

Causation of Oxidative Stress and Defense Response of a Yeast Cell Model after Treatment with Orthodontic Alloys Consisting of Metal Ions

Vito Kovac et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metal composition and release of metal ions from orthodontic alloys, as well as the oxidative consequences that the metal ions may cause in the cell. The results showed that beta titanium alloy released the fewest metal ions and did not cause oxidative stress or protein damage. Stainless steel and cobalt-chromium alloy, on the other hand, can cause oxidative stress and protein damage at high concentrations. All metal ions from orthodontic alloys alter the activity of antioxidant enzymes in some way.

Toxicity of Orthodontic Brackets Examined by Single Cell Tracking

Morgan Wishney et al.

Summary: The study investigates the cytotoxic effects of orthodontic brackets using the method of single cell tracking. The results show that bracket-conditioned media reduce cell division and migration, increase the rate of asynchronous sister cell division, and have no clear effect on cell morphology. This study concludes that orthodontic brackets have cytotoxic effects, and single cell tracking is an effective method for studying subtle biomaterials cytotoxicity.

Summary: The study evaluated the cytotoxic effects of orthodontic molar bands after multiple sterilization and found that the bands remained biocompatible even after 8 cycles of sterilization. This suggests that clinicians can safely sterilize the molar bands without risk of cytotoxicity for patients.

Cytotoxic evaluation of two orthodontic silver solder materials on human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells and the effects of antioxidant and antiapoptotic reagents

Ghada Nimeri et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the cytotoxicity effects of two different silver solder materials used for orthodontic appliances on human periodontal ligament fibroblast cells. Results showed both silver solders were cytotoxic, with Summit being more toxic than Leone. It was also found that oxidative stress and apoptosis were not involved in the mechanism of cytotoxicity.

Summary: This study developed a new setup to evaluate commercially available orthodontic wires, testing metal alloy materials under extreme conditions to simulate their behavior in the mouth. The electrochemical testing and surface analysis revealed the corrosion behavior and ion release of the wires, providing valuable insights for dental material selection for patients with underlying health conditions.

Evaluation of Clinical, Biochemical and Microbiological Markers Related to Dental Caries

Maria D. Ferrer et al.

Summary: The study evaluated various markers related to dental caries in adults and found lactate in plaque to be associated with caries, while tooth-brushing frequency was related to levels of Streptococcus dentisani. Women showed better oral health parameters than men, and low pH and high lactate levels were associated with high caries rates. No association was found between bacteria levels and caries indices.

Summary: Fixed orthodontic treatment could contribute to oxidative stress by increasing metal ion concentrations and releasing reactive oxygen species. The health risk posed by released heavy metals and oxidative stress parameters during treatment is estimated, with suggestions for preventive use of antioxidants discussed.
