Thymol in Trachyspermum ammi seed extract exhibits neuroprotection, learning, and memory enhancement in scopolamine-induced Alzheimer's disease mouse model

Binod Timalsina et al.

Summary: This study investigates the therapeutic potential of Tachyspermum ammi seed extract (TASE) and its principal component thymol for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease (AD) in a mouse model. The findings suggest that TASE and thymol can reduce oxidative stress, enhance learning and memory, decrease A beta 1-42 accumulation, and promote neurogenesis, indicating their potential as natural therapeutic agents for neurodegenerative disorders.

More than a marker: potential pathogenic functions of MAP2

Rebecca A. DeGiosio et al.

Summary: This article reviews the structure and functions of MAP2, including its role in neurite outgrowth, synaptic plasticity, and regulation of protein folding/transport. The dysregulation of MAP2 in various brain disorders is also discussed, and the concept of MAP2opathy is proposed.

Thymol ameliorated neurotoxicity and cognitive deterioration in a thioacetamide-induced hepatic encephalopathy rat model; involvement of the BDNF/CREB signaling pathway

Hanan A. Ogaly et al.

Summary: This study found that thymol has a neuroprotective effect against neurotoxicity and cognitive deterioration caused by hepatic encephalopathy. Thymol supplementation improved liver function, reduced serum ammonia levels, and improved locomotor and cognitive deficits. It modulated oxidative stress, neurotransmitters, and brain ATP levels, and ameliorated histopathological damage, astrocyte swelling, and brain edema. Thymol also downregulated NF-kB and upregulated GFAP expression, and promoted CREB and BDNF expression, as well as increased brain cAMP levels.

Centella asiatica promotes early differentiation, axodendritic maturation and synaptic formation in primary hippocampal neurons

Md Abdul Hannan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of Centella asiatica and its active component asiatic acid on various stages of neuronal polarity. The results showed that CAE enhanced neurite outgrowth, dendritic and axonal morphology, and facilitated synapse formation, indicating its neurotrophic function. Asiatic acid also promoted neurite outgrowth, but to a lesser extent compared to CAE.

Flavones 7,8-DHF, Quercetin, and Apigenin Against Tau Toxicity via Activation of TRKB Signaling in ΔK280 TauRD-DsRed SH-SY5Y Cells

Ni-Ni Chiang et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the Tau aggregation inhibitory activity and neuroprotection of four natural flavones in SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells. Among them, 7,8-DHF, quercetin, and apigenin showed promising results in reducing Tau aggregation, oxidative stress, and promoting neurite outgrowth. The neuroprotective effects of these flavones were mediated through HSPB1, NRF2, and TRKB pathways, providing new potential treatment strategies for Alzheimer's disease.

Glutamine deprivation triggers NAGK-dependent hexosamine salvage

Sydney Campbell et al.

Summary: In pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDA) cells, limiting glutamine suppresses de novo hexosamine synthesis but increases free GlcNAc abundance, leading to GlcNAc salvage via NAGK to support UDP-GlcNAc pools and tumor growth. These findings highlight the importance of NAGK-dependent hexosamine salvage in PDA tumor growth and potential implications for cancer treatment.
