Chitosan-based beads as sustainable adsorbents for wastewater remediation: a review

Akash Balakrishnan et al.

Summary: Water contamination is a growing global issue, and current methods for water and wastewater treatment are limited, especially in terms of difficult regeneration of fossil-fuel derived nano-adsorbents. Advanced methods using sustainable materials like chitosan are needed. Chitosan, a biopolymer extracted from shellfish, is non-toxic, abundant, and chemically stable. It can be shaped into various forms for wastewater treatment. In this review, we focus on chitosan-based beads and their applications in wastewater treatment, including adsorption mechanisms, pollutant removal, functionalization, and regeneration. Notably, chitosan/Fe-hydroxyapatite beads have high adsorption capacity for lead removal, while imprinted magnetic chitosan beads show good reusability for nickel removal.

Adsorptive removal of 2,4-dinitrophenol from aqueous phase using amine functionalized metal organic framework (NH2-MIL-101(Cr))

Sakshi Walia et al.

Summary: This study successfully synthesized an amine functionalized chromium based metal organic framework (NH2-MIL-101(Cr)) using the hydrothermal method. The prepared MOF was characterized for its structural, textural, morphological, and thermal properties. The NH2-MIL-101(Cr) showed a high surface area of 1321 m2/g and exhibited remarkable adsorption capacity for 2,4-dinitrophenol removal. Optimization studies were conducted for various process conditions, and the adsorption mechanism and data were analyzed. The results suggest that the hydrogen bonding interactions between the nitro group of 2,4-dinitrophenol and the amino group of NH2-MIL-101(Cr) contribute to its high adsorption tendency.
