Placental lipid transport and content in response to maternal overweight and gestational diabetes mellitus in human term placenta

Lin Song et al.

Summary: The study found that maternal overweight mainly affects placental lipid metabolism, leading to fetal overgrowth. Compared to gestational diabetes, maternal overweight plays a more important role in affecting placental lipid transport.

Effects of Dietary α-Linolenic Acid Treatment and the Efficiency of Its Conversion to Eicosapentaenoic and Docosahexaenoic Acids in Obesity and Related Diseases

Marija Takic et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the effects of dietary supplementation with alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) in obesity and related diseases. It discusses the impact of obesity on desaturase and elongase activities, which may influence the metabolic conversion of ALA. Generally, supplementation with ALA or ALA-rich oils increases EPA levels and has no effect on DHA or omega-3 index. Stearidonic acid can enhance the conversion of ALA to long-chain n-3 PUFA in obesity. Recent studies suggest that EPA and DHA intake should be a primary dietary treatment strategy for improving the omega-3 index in obesity and related diseases.

Why has Japan become the world's most long-lived country: insights from a food and nutrition perspective

Shoichiro Tsugane

Summary: Japan has the longest average life expectancy among G7 countries, mainly due to low mortality rates from ischemic heart disease and cancer. This is thought to be attributed to factors such as low prevalence of obesity, high intake of fish and soybeans, and low intake of red meat.

Maternal Factors Associated with Levels of Fatty Acids, Specifically n-3 PUFA during Pregnancy: ECLIPSES Study

Estefania Aparicio et al.

Summary: This study found that factors such as high education levels, older age, consumption of fish and seafood, and non-smoking are significantly associated with serum fatty acid concentrations in pregnant women, leading to a better omega-3 fatty acid profile. Further research is needed to explore the health consequences of these findings.

Intrauterine Transfer of Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids in Mother-Infant Dyads as Analyzed at Time of Delivery

Vanessa Woodard et al.

Summary: The study found significant differences in the intrauterine transfer percentages of arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and total fatty acids (TFA) between maternal plasma fatty acid tertiles, with the highest transfer percentages in the lowest maternal fatty acid concentration tertile. This indicates that fatty acid transfer to the fetus is prioritized during gestation, even in periods of maternal nutritional inadequacy.

Fatty acids in the placenta of appropiate-versus small-for-gestational-age infants at term birth

Ariadna Gomez-Vilarrubla et al.

Summary: In this study, differences in placental fatty acid composition and estimated desaturase and elongase activities were observed between appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) and small-for-gestational-age (SGA) infants. Placentas from SGA infants had lower levels of omega-3 fatty acids and higher omega-6/omega-3 ratios, as well as lower elongase and higher desaturase activity compared to AGA infants. Further studies on the omega-3 fatty acid status in SGA infants may be warranted for prenatal interventions.

Dietary Polyunsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs): Uses and Potential Health Benefits

Bharat Kapoor et al.

Summary: PUFAs, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, play a crucial role in maintaining human health and protecting against diseases. These fatty acids have nutritional effects that can improve physical functioning and metabolic rate, regulating various cellular activities in the body.
