The PPR protein RARE1-mediated editing of chloroplast accD transcripts is required for fatty acid biosynthesis and heat tolerance in Arabidopsis

Chao Huang et al.

Summary: It has been found that loss of accD-C794 RNA editing under heat stress leads to a yellow and dwarf phenotype with decreased chloroplast gene expression. Artificial enhancement of C794-edited accD gene expression improves heat tolerance in Arabidopsis. The defective accD-C794 editing may result in reduced ACCase activity and membrane structural disruption under heat stress.

A large-scale population based organelle pan-genomes construction and phylogeny analysis reveal the genetic diversity and the evolutionary origins of chloroplast and mitochondrion in Brassica napus L.

Honfang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, we constructed the chloroplast and mitochondrial pan-genomes of oilseed rape and investigated the genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of different Brassica species. We identified four main cytoplasmic haplotypes and found that the chloroplast genomes exhibited a higher level of single-base polymorphism than mitochondrial genomes. The phylogenetic tree revealed multiple origins of oilseed rape cytoplasm, with the nap-type possibly originated from B. rapa.

Pan-mitogenomics reveals the genetic basis of cytonuclear conflicts in citrus hybridization, domestication, and diversification

Nan Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolutionary conflicts between cytoplasmic and nuclear genomes in citrus plants. The researchers constructed a pan-mitogenome and identified chimeric open reading frames generated by extensive structural variations. They also analyzed the variations in the nuclear, mitochondrial, and chloroplast genomes of 184 citrus accessions. The findings suggest discordant interactions between the cytoplasmic and nuclear genomes due to mutation rate and levels of heteroplasmy. The study provides important implications for genetics and breeding in citrus plants.

Comparison of DUS testing and SNP fingerprinting for variety identification in cucumber

Jian Zhang et al.

Summary: Variety identification is crucial for protecting intellectual property, ensuring seed quality, and promoting breeding innovation. Morphological evaluation and DNA fingerprinting are two dominant methods used for variety identification. This study evaluated 134 cucumber varieties using DUS testing and genotyping with SNPs. Fruit shape was found to play a significant role in variety identification. The results from DUS testing and DNA fingerprinting were correlated, and the varieties could be categorized into subgroups based on population structure analysis. These methods are valuable for future research on a larger scale.

Madeline W. Oravec et al.

Summary: Research has identified a maternally inherited cold tolerance in the heirloom cucumber cultivar 'Chipper', which enhances cold recovery in plants after treatment. Analysis of nuclear transcriptome and reactive oxygen species confirmed the genetic basis of this cold tolerance lies in a chloroplast-associated non-synonymous SNP in the CF1FO-ATP synthase beta-subunit gene, offering potential for enhancing plant recovery from cold stress through chloroplast transformation or gene editing.
