Irisin and Secondary Osteoporosis in Humans

Roberta Zerlotin et al.

Summary: Irisin is a peptide secreted by skeletal muscle that plays an important role in bone metabolism. It promotes osteogenesis, protects osteocytes, prevents loss of bone and muscle mass, and accelerates fracture healing. Clinical evidence suggests that low levels of irisin are associated with an increased risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures. It may also serve as a marker for monitoring bone quality in secondary osteoporosis.

Irisin Serum Levels and Skeletal Muscle Assessment in a Cohort of Charcot-Marie-Tooth Patients

Graziana Colaianni et al.

Summary: This study found that CMT patients have lower levels of irisin compared to healthy individuals. Among CMT patients, women have higher levels of irisin than men, despite men having higher skeletal muscle mass. These findings suggest that irisin may be associated with muscle mass and strength loss, as well as bone loss, in CMT patients.

The genetic background and vitamin D supplementation can affect irisin levels in Prader-Willi syndrome

M. F. Faienza et al.

Summary: The study found that levels of irisin in PWS patients did not differ from controls overall, but were significantly reduced in pediatric and adult PWS patients with the DEL15 genetic background. Additionally, 25(OH) vitamin-D levels in pediatric PWS patients were shown to affect irisin serum concentration. Multiple regression analysis suggested that genetic background and vitamin-D supplementation play a role in determining irisin levels in PWS patients, with IQ also being a factor in adult patients.
