Antimicrobial potential of known and novel probiotics on in vitro periodontitis biofilms

Wannes Van Holm et al.

Summary: Several oral diseases are caused by changes in the oral microbiome, and antibiotics are commonly used to treat them. However, due to antibiotic resistance, alternatives such as probiotics are being explored. This study compared the effects of different strains of Lactobacillus and Streptococcus salivarius on oral biofilms. It was found that certain Lactobacillus strains reduced the pathobiont A. actinomycetemcomitans, while S. salivarius strains were more effective against other pathobionts.

In Vitro Preventive Effect and Mechanism of Action of Weissella cibaria CMU against Streptococcus mutans Biofilm Formation and Periodontal Pathogens

Mi-Sun Kang et al.

Summary: In this study, the oral probiotic Weissella cibaria CMU (CMU) exhibited strong anti-biofilm, antibacterial, and anti-inflammatory activity against periodontopathogens. CMU showed superior inhibitory effects on biofilm formation and growth of Streptococcus mutans, and exerted potent antibacterial effects against S. mutans and Porphyromonas gingivalis. CMU also suppressed the gene expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulated local inflammation.

Clinical, microbiological and immunological short, medium and long-term effects of different strains of probiotics as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy in patients with periodontitis. Systematic review with meta-analysis

Federico Ausenda et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis analyzed the use of probiotics as an adjunct to non-surgical periodontal therapy in patients with periodontitis. The study found that probiotics provide additional clinical benefits at a clinical, microbiological, and immunological level. However, due to data heterogeneity, the immunological and microbiological findings could only be analyzed descriptively.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of two new formulations of paraprobiotics, a toothpaste and a mouthwash, for the treatment of periodontal disease. The results showed that these products significantly reduced clinical indices and the presence of periodontopathogens, providing a valid support to non-surgical treatment.

Impact of adjunctive procedures on recombinant human fibroblast growth factor (rhFGF-2) mediated periodontal regeneration therapy: A retrospective study

Yohei Nakayama et al.

Summary: Modified papilla preservation technique (mPPT) and autogenous bone grafts (AG) act as powerful adjunctive effects on rhFGF-2 therapy, significantly improving probing depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), and bone defects. The combination of mPPT and AG shows positive correlations with improvements in radiographic bone fill, highlighting the importance of these adjunctive procedures in periodontal tissue regeneration. More studies are needed to confirm these findings through randomized clinical trials.

Hyperglycemia accelerates inflammaging in the gingival epithelium through inflammasomes activation

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that hyperglycemia accelerates inflammaging in gingival epithelium by increasing senescent cell burden and SASP factors, while reducing the expression of molecules related to gingival epithelial barrier function. In vitro experiments showed that high glucose induced inflammaging in HOK, and inhibiting Caspase-1 could prevent inflammasome activation.
