Comprehensive analysis of alfa defensin expression and prognosis in human colorectal cancer

Xinliang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the expression, correlation, mutation, and functional enrichment of several defensin family members in pancreatic cancer and colorectal cancer (CRC). DEFA5 and DEFA6 showed significantly increased expression in CRC tissues, with DEFA5 potentially associated with better prognosis and DEFA6 potentially associated with poor prognosis. Immunohistochemistry experiments confirmed higher expression of DEFA6 in adenoma and slightly higher expression in carcinoma compared to normal mucosa. DEFA5 and DEFA6 demonstrate a certain degree of sensitivity and specificity in predicting CRC.

Human neutrophil peptide 1 promotes immune sterilization in vivo by reducing the virulence of multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae and increasing the ability of macrophages

Hui-Yun Wang et al.

Summary: By studying the antimicrobial peptide's antibacterial effect and impact on cytotoxicity-related indicators for Klebsiella, it was found that HNP-1 exhibited a significant antibacterial effect, improved outer membrane permeability of K. pneumoniae, and increased the expression of antimicrobial peptide, oxidative stress, and autophagy-related genes. HNP-1 also reduced the content of LPS, CPS, and outer membrane proteins of K. pneumoniae, promoting immune sterilization against multidrug-resistant strains.

Human β-Defensin 2 (HBD-2) Displays Oncolytic Activity but Does Not Affect Tumour Cell Migration

Guneet K. Bindra et al.

Summary: Defensins are a crucial component of the cationic host defence peptide (HDP) family and have antimicrobial and immunomodulatory activities. This study reveals that human beta-defensin 2 (HBD-2) can kill tumor cells through acute lytic cell death and does not affect tumor cell migration.

Immunomodulatory effects of β-defensin 2 on macrophages induced immuno-upregulation and their antitumor function in breast cancer

Sonam Agarwal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the role of beta-defensin 2 in macrophages in terms of ROS, cytokines, chemokine expression, and antitumor function in breast cancer. The results demonstrate that beta-defensin 2 modulates the immunomodulatory and antitumor function of macrophages, suggesting it as a potential therapeutic target for immunotherapy in breast cancer.

The inhibitory effect of human DEFA5 in growth of gastric cancer by targeting BMI1

Zhongwei Wu et al.

Summary: DEFA5 is downregulated in human gastric cancer and overexpression of DEFA5 can effectively inhibit cell proliferation and colony forming ability in gastric cancer cell lines, inducing cell cycle arrest and suppressing tumor growth through regulating related signaling pathways.

Endogenous modification of the chemoattractant CXCL5 alters receptor usage and enhances its activity toward neutrophils and monocytes

Mieke Metzemaekers et al.

Summary: CXCL5 interacts with CXCR2 and CXCR1 to activate neutrophils, and its N-terminal modifications can enhance its signaling effects. Additionally, CXCL5 can also attract monocytes, especially when the N-terminus is truncated.

Exercise and the immune system: taking steps to improve responses to cancer immunotherapy

Michael P. Gustafson et al.

Summary: Cancer immunotherapies have shown remarkable success in providing new hope for cancer patients, but a significant number of patients still do not respond to treatment. Exercise and physical activity have been shown to reduce cancer incidence and improve outcomes, potentially through enhancing immune function. Exercise can lead to increased mobilization of leukocytes and improve physical fitness, which in turn may have positive effects on immune responses to cancer immunotherapies.
