Improving the accuracy of GIPAW chemical shielding calculations with cluster and fragment corrections

D. Joshua Hartman et al.

Summary: Ab initio methods for predicting NMR parameters in the solid state play an important role in structural characterizations. A new molecular correction technique has been developed, which combines different methods to improve the accuracy of chemical shielding tensor predictions. Benchmark calculations demonstrate that the improved algorithm outperforms existing methods in terms of prediction accuracy.

Ion pair charge-transfer salts based on protonated bipyridines and [W(CN)6(bpy)]2- anion-structure and properties

Anna Jurowska et al.

Summary: A series of salts containing [W(CN)(6)(bpy)](2-) and protonated pyridine-based cations were synthesized and characterized. The structures of five salts were determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. It was found that unsubstituted pyridine-based salts have a single doubly protonated cation, while salts with dimethyl-substituted pyridines have two monoprotonated cations. Furthermore, the introduction of two methyl substituents increased the hydrophobicity of the cation and transformed the 2D structure into a 3D structure. The spectral characteristics (IR and UV-Vis) were presented and the IPCT transitions were discussed and compared with analogous [W(CN)(8)](4-) ion salts.

Simultaneous Estimation of Two Coupled Hydrogen Bond Geometries from Pairs of Entangled NMR Parameters: The Test Case of 4-Hydroxypyridine Anion

Elena Yu Tupikina et al.

Summary: A computational method for estimating the geometry of two coupled hydrogen bonds with geometries close to linear using NMR parameters was proposed. The method was developed based on the quantum-chemical investigation of complexes formed by oxygen and nitrogen atoms with substituted methanols. The method selects pairs of NMR chemical shifts to determine the geometry of two hydrogen bonds and shows good agreement with direct quantum-chemical calculations.

Structural and physicochemical characterization of ion-pair salts with dipyridyl cations and [Fe(CN)6]4- and [Fe(CN)5(NO)]2- anions

Anna Jurowska et al.

Summary: A series of salts with different cations and [Fe(CN)6]4- as the anion were synthesized and characterized. The structures of three salts containing [Fe(CN)5(NO)]2- were determined, while the formulas of other salts were determined by elemental analysis and infrared spectroscopy. Ion-pair-charge-transfer bands in the visible range of the reflectance spectra were observed in the [Fe(CN)6]4- salts, and the relationship between the position of this band, the cation type, and the oxidation state of the compounds was discussed.

1,3,5-Triaza-7-Phosphaadamantane (PTA) as a 31P NMR Probe for Organometallic Transition Metal Complexes in Solution

Ilya G. Shenderovich

Summary: The P-31 chemical shift of 1,3,5-triaza-7-phosphaadamantane (PTA) is solely influenced by non-covalent interactions, with a maximum change of 6 ppm due to hydrogen bonding, but over 100 ppm when the phosphorus atom is coordinated to a metal. This difference can be utilized to validate or refute structural models of organometallic transition metal complexes by comparing experimental and DFT calculated values.

Summary: The study demonstrates the importance of using the polarizable continuum approximation in solvent effect calculations to distinguish between the macroscopic reaction field of the solvent and specific solute-solvent interactions. Additionally, experimental data highlights the significance of the solvent effect in nonpolar solvents.

Modeling of the Response of Hydrogen Bond Properties on an External Electric Field: Geometry, NMR Chemical Shift, Spin-Spin Scalar Coupling

Ilya G. Shenderovich et al.

Summary: Theoretical study of molecular systems response to an external electric field in a wide range shows that the adduct under field approach can model geometric and spectral changes in polar media if a system has one bond with significantly higher polarizability. This approach can even model extreme cases like proton dissociation in hydrogen halides, and is fulfilled for many complexes with one hydrogen bond.
