Development and validation of a circulating microRNA panel for the early detection of breast cancer

Ruiyang Zou et al.

Summary: This study conducted the largest comprehensive multi-center research to date and identified 30 dysregulated miRNAs associated with breast cancer. An optimized eight-miRNA panel was successfully validated in diverse ethnic groups and showed consistent performance. The panel has the potential to be used for breast cancer screening in conjunction with mammography.

Circulating microRNA-103a-3p could be a diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for breast cancer

Hui Liu et al.

Summary: The expression level of miR-103a-3p in breast cancer is associated with disease severity and patient survival outcomes. Circulating serum miR-103a-3p could potentially serve as a non-invasive diagnostic and prognostic biomarker for breast cancer.

Evaluation of Expressed MicroRNAs as Prospective Biomarkers for Detection of Breast Cancer

Amal Ahmed Mohamed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of serum microRNAs (miRs) as biomarkers for early detection of breast cancer (BC) in Egyptian patients. The results showed that miR-155, miR-373, and miR-10b were upregulated, while miR-34a was downregulated in nonmetastatic BC patients. miR-155 and miR-10b were correlated with tumor size and nodal involvement. The combination of these miRs showed high sensitivity and specificity for BC detection.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Circulating status of microRNAs 660-5p and 210-3p in breast cancer patients

Zahra Nashtahosseini et al.

Summary: The study investigated the expression levels of serum miR-660-5p and miR-210-3p in breast cancer patients compared to healthy controls. The results showed significant up-regulation of these microRNAs in breast cancer patients, especially in the early stages, indicating their potential as biomarkers for breast cancer detection with reasonable sensitivity and specificity. Further large-scale studies are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

Summary: The study identified six upregulated miRNAs and a two-miRNA panel in the blood as potential biomarkers for the diagnosis and prognosis of breast cancer. The two-miRNA panel showed a better diagnostic performance than individual miRNAs, with high sensitivity and specificity. The high expression of these miRNAs was also associated with poor prognosis in breast cancer.
