The role of vitamin D in periodontal health and disease

Summary: Vitamin D plays a crucial role in calcium and bone metabolism, immune regulation, and has anti-inflammatory effects. Low serum vitamin D levels are associated with increased severity of periodontitis, a chronic inflammatory condition characterized by tissue destruction around the tooth. Clinical studies have shown an inverse relationship between serum 25OHD(3) and periodontal disease inflammation.

This study investigated the effects of calcitriol on inflammation and autophagy in a T2DM rat model of periodontitis.

Comparison of calcifediol with vitamin D for prevention or cure of vitamin D deficiency

Summary: Vitamin D deficiency affects a significant portion of the world's population, with 7% having severe deficiency and one third having mild deficiency. This study compares the effectiveness of calcifediol or 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) versus vitamin D itself in preventing or treating deficiency. Calcifediol has higher absorption rates, is immediately accessible to the circulation, and is more potent than vitamin D, especially in cases of fat malabsorption or after bariatric surgery. It may be a preferred option for correcting deficiency in individuals with impaired liver 25-hydroxylase activity.

The effect of the Oral-Gut axis on periodontitis in inflammatory bowel disease: A review of microbe and immune mechanism associations

Summary: Periodontitis and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) are gastrointestinal tract inflammatory diseases with common features of microbial-induced ecological dysregulation and immune inflammatory response. The close relationship between periodontitis and IBD indicates an Oral-Gut axis, where periodontitis patients have higher prevalence of IBD and IBD patients have higher prevalence and severity of periodontitis. The interconnection between the two involves pathogenic bacteria colonization in the gut, immune dysregulation, and alteration of oral microbiota, with Th17 cell responses and pro-inflammatory factors playing crucial roles.

This study aims to evaluate the role of diet in the dysbiosis of the oral microbiome underlying periodontal disease.

New tendencies in non-surgical periodontal therapy

Local and systemic mechanisms linking periodontal disease and inflammatory comorbidities

Summary: Periodontitis is causally linked to the development of other chronic inflammatory diseases outside the oral mucosa, and intervention studies have shown that local treatment of periodontitis can ameliorate surrogate markers of comorbid conditions. Experimental animal studies have further strengthened the potential causal link by establishing biologically plausible and clinically consistent mechanisms. Understanding the impact of disseminated periodontal pathogens and systemic inflammation associated with periodontitis on extra-oral pathologies may lead to new therapeutic options to reduce the risk of periodontitis-associated comorbidities.
