Acute iron oxide nanoparticles exposure induced murine eosinophilic airway inflammation via TLR2 and TLR4 signaling

Liang Yue et al.

Summary: This study investigated the acute airway inflammation caused by iron oxide nanoparticles (Fe2O3 NPs) and its possible mechanism. The results showed that Fe2O3 NPs damaged the bronchial epithelial barrier, induced infiltration of neutrophils and lymphocytes, increased mucus secretion, and elevated expression of eosinophilic proteins and chemokines. Furthermore, the study found that TLR2 and TLR4 played important roles in Fe2O3 NPs-induced acute eosinophilic airway inflammation.

Toxicity mechanism of nanomaterials: Focus on endoplasmic reticulum stress

Binjing Li et al.

Summary: The widespread application of nanomaterials has raised concerns about their safety, particularly regarding their toxic mechanisms. Endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) has recently gained attention as a new toxic mechanism of nanomaterials. This review examines the mechanism of ERS in nanomaterial-associated toxicity and discusses the factors influencing the ability of nanoparticles to induce ERS. It also analyzes the specific role and molecular mechanism of ERS under the action of different nanoparticles, including its relationship with inflammation, oxidative stress, lipid metabolism, and apoptosis.

Pia A. S. Kinaret et al.

Summary: Toxicogenomics utilizes computational methods to map molecular events and biological processes, and in this study, the transcriptomic and immunopathological changes associated with airway exposure to a variety of engineered nanomaterials (ENM) were investigated. The results show that surface modification and core chemistry of ENM can have varying effects on airway toxicity, and a subset of shared differentially expressed genes can help cluster these ENM according to their toxicity levels. This study provides valuable information for developing predictive models for ENM toxicity.
