The suppression of TdMRP3 genes reduces the phytic acid and increases the nutrient accumulation in durum wheat grain

Arianna Frittelli et al.

Summary: Micronutrient malnutrition affects more than half of the world population. The reduced bioavailability of microelements in raw materials is a major cause of mineral deficiency in populations who mainly consume staple crops. The production of low phytic acid (lpa) cereals is a goal of breeding programs to improve nutritional value. Targeting Induced Local Lesions IN Genomes (TILLING) has been used to silence genes involved in the accumulation of phytic acid in durum wheat, leading to increased micronutrient content. These mutant lines show promising potential for obtaining durum wheats with higher nutritional value.

Exploring the new dimensions of selenium research to understand the underlying mechanism of its uptake, translocation, and accumulation

Meenakshi Raina et al.

Summary: Selenium is a vital mineral for plants and animals, but plants vary in their physiological response and uptake of selenium. Genetic control determines the selenium content in edible plants, with high concentrations potentially harmful to plant health. Understanding selenium uptake and metabolism in plants can lead to genetic biofortification and phytoremediation.

Effects of sulfur application on selenium uptake and seed selenium speciation in soybean (Glycine max L.) grown in different soil types

Xiaofang Deng et al.

Summary: The study investigated the effects of sulfur application on selenium uptake and seed selenium speciation in high-protein soybean grown in different soil types. The results showed that while sulfur application inhibited selenium uptake in soybean plants, it did not influence seed selenium speciation and selenomethionine was the major selenium species.

Comparative proteomics analysis of the responses to selenium in selenium-enriched alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.) leaves

Qingdong Wang et al.

Summary: Selenite foliar spraying can increase the mass of alfalfa leaves and the content of chlorophyll and selenium. Proteomics analysis revealed significant changes in protein expression, metabolic pathways, and potential mechanisms for increasing leaf yield. Specifically, selenium treatment affects metabolic processes, gene expression, and protein response pathways in alfalfa leaves.

Interaction Between Sulfur and Iron in Plants

Stefania Astolfi et al.

Summary: The interaction between sulfur and iron in plants is vital, with sulfur availability playing a key role in the plant's ability to uptake and accumulate iron. Excessive sulfur supply enhances iron content in wheat grains, while iron deficiency increases the demand for sulfur.
