Time-resolved infrared absorption spectroscopy applied to photoinduced reactions: how and why

Alberto Mezzetti et al.

Summary: Time-resolved infrared spectroscopy is a commonly used technique in studying photoinduced reactions. However, there has been limited communication between different scientific communities and even within the same community. It is also surprising that non-specialists struggle to understand the potential of this technique, despite it being taught to students in chemistry, material science, biology, and physics. This tutorial review aims to address these issues by providing a comprehensive overview and discussing case studies to help readers understand the capabilities of time-resolved infrared spectroscopy in studying photoinduced reaction mechanisms.

Quinone transport in the closed light-harvesting 1 reaction center complex from the thermophilic purple bacterium Thermochromatium tepidum

Rikako Kishi et al.

Summary: This study revealed the mechanism of photosynthetic quinone reduction and transport in thermophilic purple bacteria through light-induced FTIR signal detection and isotope labeling techniques. The efficient quinone exchanges within the closed LH1 ring's hydrophobic channels were demonstrated, indicating a different quinone transport mechanism compared to other purple bacteria.
