Prediction of postoperative atrial fibrillation with the systemic immune-inflammation index in patients undergoing cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass: a retrospective, single-center study

Takuya Hinoue et al.

Summary: This study found that preoperative systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) can predict the occurrence of postoperative atrial fibrillation (POAF) after cardiac surgery using cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB). It is particularly accurate in predicting POAF in patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG).

Long-Term Survival After On-Pump and Off-Pump Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting

John J. Squiers et al.

Summary: The study found that off-pump coronary artery bypass grafting may be associated with increased long-term mortality compared to on-pump CABG, with variations between high-volume and low-volume surgeons. The mortality hazard with off-pump CABG was reduced when performed by high-volume surgeons, while it was increased for low-volume surgeons, suggesting the importance of surgeon experience in determining patient outcomes.

Targeting the CCL2-CCR2 axis for atheroprotection

Marios K. Georgakis et al.

Summary: Decades of research have established atherosclerosis as an inflammatory disease. Clinical trials have shown the efficacy of anti-inflammatory strategies in reducing cardiovascular events, but there is a need for new anti-inflammatory agents that target atherosclerosis-specific immune mechanisms. The CCL2-CCR2 axis has therapeutic potential in human atherosclerosis. However, there are challenges and opportunities related to pharmacological targeting of this pathway that need further investigation and discussion.

Serum Cytokines Predict the Severity of Coronary Artery Disease Without Acute Myocardial Infarction

Sheng Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between serum cytokines and the severity of coronary artery disease (CAD) in patients with non-acute myocardial infarction (AMI). It found that serum levels of IL-4, IL-12p70, IL-17, and IFN-alpha were significantly lower in the severe CAD group compared to the non-severe CAD group. IL-12p70 and IL-17 were negatively correlated with the severity of CAD. The study also identified IL-12p70, IL-17, HDL-C, gender, and diabetes as independent predictors of severe CAD.

Rutin and selenium nanoparticles protected against STZ-induced diabetic nephropathy in rats through downregulating Jak-2/Stat3 pathway and upregulating Nrf-2/HO-1 pathway

Randa A. Zaghloul et al.

Summary: This study investigated the inhibitory effects of Rutin and Selenium nanoparticles on the Stat3 pathway in diabetic nephropathy. The results showed that the combination of Rutin and Selenium nanoparticles had a potential renoprotective effect. The study suggests that Rutin and Selenium nanoparticles may alleviate inflammation and kidney damage by modulating the Nrf-2/HO-1 and Jak-2/Stat3 pathways.

Comparison of Selenium Nanoparticles and Sodium Selenite on the Alleviation of Early Atherosclerosis by Inhibiting Endothelial Dysfunction and Inflammation in Apolipoprotein E-Deficient Mice

Junying Xiao et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that chitosan-stabilized selenium nanoparticles (CS-SeNPs) and Na2SeO3 have significant anti-atherosclerotic activity in a high-fat-diet-fed mouse model of atherosclerosis. They were found to alleviate vascular endothelial dysfunction and inflammation, leading to reduced atherosclerotic lesions in mouse aortae. Importantly, CS-SeNPs showed potential for atherosclerosis prevention with lower toxicity compared to Na2SeO3. These findings suggest that selenium supplementation may be a promising therapeutic strategy for atherosclerosis.

Shear stress associated with cardiopulmonary bypass induces expression of inflammatory cytokines and necroptosis in monocytes

Lan N. Tu et al.

Summary: Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) is commonly used in cardiac surgeries and can lead to inflammation and multiorgan dysfunction, especially in neonatal patients. Shear stress is found to upregulate cytokines via calcium-dependent signaling pathways, while TNF-alpha may contribute to post-CPB inflammation through necroptosis. Calcium and TNF-alpha signaling could be potential novel targets for ameliorating post-CPB inflammation.

High-sensitivity CRP may be a marker of HDL dysfunction and remodeling in patients with acute coronary syndrome

Xiaoyu Tang et al.

Summary: In patients with coronary artery disease (CAD), increasing levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (HDL-C) as an add-on to statins does not decrease cardiovascular risk. HDL functional metric-cholesterol efflux capacity (CEC) may be a better predictor of CAD risk than HDL-C. The study suggests that hsCRP levels, a marker of acute inflammation, may be associated with HDL dysfunction in ACS subjects.

Summary: This study contrasted the effects of different surface coatings on the growth of human cells on bacterial nanocellulose small-diameter vascular grafts. It was found that fibronectin and heparin-chitosan coatings could positively impact endothelialization, potentially improving the longevity and reducing thrombogenicity of the vascular grafts in the future.

Serum Concentration of the Phytohormone Abscisic Acid Is Associated With Immune-Regulatory Mediators and Is a Potential Biomarker of Disease Severity in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

Summary: Blood ABA levels were significantly reduced in COPD and asthma patients, while PPAR-gamma levels were elevated in COPD patients. ABA was positively correlated with immune-regulatory factors and negatively correlated with inflammatory markers in COPD, with an increase in advanced COPD stages. These findings suggest that ABA may play a role in regulating COPD pathogenesis and could be a potential biomarker for COPD stages.

EuroScore and IL-6 predict the course in ICU after cardiac surgery

Andreas Bauer et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the predictive properties of EuroScore and IL-6 for mortality, prolonged postoperative mechanical ventilation, and prolonged stay in ICU after cardiac surgery. Results showed that both EuroScore and IL-6 were associated with increased mortality and predictors for prolonged mechanical ventilation and longer ICU stay. The combination of highly elevated levels of IL-6 and EuroScore may be excellent predictors for an unfortunate postoperative course in ICU.
