Vortex-induced vibration of a flexible fluid-conveying riser due to vessel motion

Jinlong Duan et al.

Summary: The study found that both vessel motion and internal flow have a significant impact on the vortex-induced vibration (VIV) of flexible risers. The increase of internal flow velocity changes the VIV amplitude, accompanied by frequency transition. At the same time, vessel motion leads to notable changes in top tension and CF VIV characteristics.

Two-degrees-of-freedom vortex-induced vibration of cylinders covered with hard marine fouling

H. Ashrafipour et al.

Summary: Marine fouling has a significant impact on the Vortex-Induced Vibration (VIV) of marine structures. This study investigates the two-degree-of-freedom (2-DoF) VIV of fouled cylinders through towing tank experiments. The results show that marine fouling reduces the oscillation amplitudes and several key parameters associated with VIV.

Hydrodynamic force model for flexible pipe based on energy competition and applications into flow induced vibration prediction in uniform flow

Haojie Ren et al.

Summary: A modified hydrodynamic force model based on energy competition is developed to analyze the hydrodynamic loads on flexible cylinder pipes under bidirectional vortex-induced vibration (VIV). The model divides the loads into three parts and analyzes the energy roles of each component. Experiments are conducted to determine the hydrodynamic coefficients, and empirical models are established based on the measured values. The results show good consistencies with the experimental results, indicating the feasibility and advantages of the modified force model and the developed empirical coefficient model.

A study on the FIV hydrodynamic force coefficients of two staggered flexible cylinders via an inverse method

Wanhai Xu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the hydrodynamic characteristics of two staggered flexible cylinders in flow-induced vibration, revealing significant differences in the hydrodynamic coefficients in the cross-flow and in-line directions. The varying drag coefficients of the two cylinders differ significantly from those of a single cylinder due to subharmonic frequency components. The downstream cylinder exhibits a hybrid aspect of wake-induced flutter and vortex-induced vibration.

Laboratory measurements of the effects of interlaminar slip on vortex-induced vibrations of the unbonded umbilical

Summary: Experimental results show that the unbonded umbilical is more susceptible to reduced velocity in terms of VIV response, attributed to the nonlinear variation in bending stiffness resulting from relative slip.

Experimental investigation on vortex-induced force of a Steel Catenary Riser under in-plane vessel motion

Mengmeng Zhang et al.

Summary: The method proposed can accurately identify vortex-induced forces and coefficients from measured strains of a Steel Catenary Riser (SCR) undergoing vessel motion-induced Vortex-induced Vibration (VIV). The time-varying excitation coefficients and added mass coefficients of an SCR undergoing VIV were investigated, and significant correlations were found between certain parameters and excitation coefficients. Chaotic behaviors in vortex-induced force coefficients were observed, especially with increasing vessel motion velocity, suggesting randomness in in-plane velocity coupling with out-of-plane vibrations.
