Irradiation engineered lattice distortion in Ti-Ni shape memory alloy achieving enhanced elastocaloric effect

Yundong Zhao et al.

Summary: Large lattice distortion obtained by He ion irradiation improves the elastocaloric effect of Ti-Ni microwires, resulting in higher adiabatic temperature and isothermal entropy change. This method provides a new idea for the design of colossal elastocaloric effect materials and solid-state refrigeration applications.

Toward tunable mechanical behavior and enhanced elastocaloric effect in NiTi alloy by gradient structure

Junyu Chen et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a novel strategy to achieve highly tunable mechanical behavior and significantly enhanced elastocaloric effect in superelastic NiTi through the fabrication of a gradient structure using laser surface annealing. The gradient-structured NiTi exhibits tailorable martensitic transformation characteristics and shows improved elastocaloric cooling capacity and efficiency compared to traditional nanocrystalline and coarse-grained NiTi. The strong synergetic strengthening between fine and coarse grains in the gradient-structured NiTi contributes to these significant performance breakthroughs.

Cyclic degeneration of elastocaloric effect for NiTi shape memory alloy: Experimental observation and constitutive model

Yong Zhang et al.

Summary: Based on experimental results, this study investigated the effect of loading level on the cyclic deformation and evolution of elastocaloric effect (eCE) for NiTi shape memory alloy wires. The results showed that transformation ratchetting and degeneration of eCE occurred during cyclic deformation, which worsened with the increase of loading level. It was also found that refrigeration capacity exhibited a positive correlation with loading level in the first loading cycle, but changed non-monotonically in steady-state cycles. Additionally, a two-step phase transformation between austenite (A) and martensite (M) phases was observed. A thermo-mechanically coupled cyclic constitutive model was proposed to explain the observed phenomena.

H. Z. Lu et al.

Summary: A stable tensile recovery strain induced by a Ni4Ti3 nanoprecipitate in a Ni50.4Ti49.6 shape memory alloy fabricated via selective laser melting was reported. The heat-treated SMA exhibited a larger strain/stress field inside the grain interior region and showed three-stage phase transformation. The results provide insights into tailoring the microstructure and functional properties of NiTi SMAs by SLM.

Phase field simulation on the super-elasticity, elastocaloric and shape memory effect of geometrically graded nano-polycrystalline NiTi shape alloys

Bo Xu et al.

Summary: The proposed two-dimensional non-isothermal phase field model successfully simulated and predicted the thermo-mechanical properties of polycrystalline NiTi shape memory alloy systems, including various shape memory effects. The geometrically graded structures significantly influence the propagation of martensite transformation, improving the controllability of super-elasticity and stress-assisted two-way shape memory effect, while the enhancement of one-way shape memory effect is not significant. Additionally, designing geometrically graded structures has the potential to affect elastocaloric effect.

Summary: By using a thermomechanical coupled phase-field model, this study designs microarchitectures in NiTi matrix with different types, shapes, and volume fractions of non-transforming intermetallics, showing the potential to increase the coefficient of performance (COP) of elastocaloric composites by controlling processing parameters. Different arrangements and compositions of intermetallics can lead to significant variations in COP values, indicating the importance of selecting intermetallics with specific properties for achieving high COP.
