High strength and ductility of titanium matrix composites by nanoscale design in selective laser melting

Joseph A. Otte et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the successful production of high-performance titanium matrix composites (TMCs) using selective laser melting (SLM) and nanosized BN powder additives. The addition of nanosized BN promotes the formation of TiB nanowhiskers and grain refinement, resulting in TMCs with high tensile yield strength and retained ductility.

Mechanisms of laser energy absorption and melting behavior during selective laser melting of titanium-matrix composite: role of ceramic addition

Qing Ge et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of ceramic addition on the laser energy absorption and powder melting behaviors during SLM of TiC/Ti6Al4V composites using mesoscopic simulation. The results showed that the addition of TiC particles increased the packing density of composite powder and decreased hall velocity, leading to enhanced laser-powder interactions and improved overall laser absorptivity. Excessive addition of ceramics resulted in deteriorated surface morphology of the melted track due to the high required energy for complete melted TiC and elevated difficulty of completely wetting unmelted particles.

Microstructure evolution and mechanical properties of in-situ Ti6Al4V-TiB composites manufactured by selective laser melting

Zhiguang Zhou et al.

Summary: In situ TiB reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated via selective laser melting, with optimized processing to achieve crack-free and fully dense composites. The distribution of TiB reinforcement in the composites was mainly in the form of whisker clusters, showing different distributions in TMC1 and TMC2. The improvement in mechanical properties of the composites was attributed to Hall-Petch strengthening and load-bearing transformation strengthening.

Selective laser melting of Ti6Al4V: Effect of laser re-melting

J. Karimi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of remelting on the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V materials fabricated using selective laser melting. The results showed that the number of remeltings significantly influenced the homogenization of the microstructure and mechanical properties of the materials, with an increase in hardness and ultimate tensile strength but a decrease in ductility observed with a higher number of melting steps.

Summary: This review critically examines the important contributions related to selective laser melting (SLM) process parameters, defects, and post-processing techniques for Ti6Al4V alloy. Proper selection of process parameters and post-treatment methods are crucial in improving mechanical behavior of SLMed components. Efforts have been made to identify correlations between SLM parameters and defects, as well as analyzing the impact of post-processing approaches on mechanical behavior and biocompatibility of SLM-fabricated Ti6Al4V alloy.
