The effect of topology on the quasi-static and dynamic behaviour of SLM AlSi10Mg lattice structures

Tobias Maconachie et al.

Summary: Additive manufacturing techniques such as selective laser melting enable the fabrication of complex metallic lattice structures with useful properties such as excellent strength-to-weight ratios and energy absorption capabilities. The effects of different topologies on dynamic behavior of SLM AlSi10Mg lattice structures were investigated, with FCCZ topology demonstrating the greatest efficiency in terms of strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios.

Static and dynamic crushing of polymeric lattices fabricated by fused deposition modelling and selective laser sintering-an experimental investigation

Z. P. Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that lightweight polymeric lattices fabricated by SLS exhibit good energy absorption performance under quasi-static compression, but are prone to catastrophic collapse when subjected to impact. The use of different manufacturing techniques, such as FDM, can result in lattices with better energy absorption characteristics. The novel HS lattice design shows superior energy absorption characteristics for all tests compared to traditional octet and RD structures.

Anisotropic compression behaviors of bio-inspired modified body-centered cubic lattices validated by additive manufacturing

Peng Wang et al.

Summary: The modified body-centered cubic (MBCC) lattice structure, inspired by the deep-sea glass sponge, has been designed and optimized to have better energy absorption capacity compared to conventional structures. Extensive finite element simulations and experimental tests have validated its performance. Results show that the MBCC lattice exhibits higher energy absorption capacity than previous bio-inspired and conventional structures, approaching that of titanium alloy foams.

Compressive performance and energy absorption of additively manufactured metallic hybrid lattice structures

Lijun Xiao et al.

Summary: A hybrid lattice cell configuration combining an octet cell and a rhombic dodecahedron (RD) cell was proposed to achieve superior mechanical performance and energy absorption capacity. Experimental and numerical results demonstrated that the hybrid structure outperforms the individual octet and RD lattice structures in terms of energy absorption, and its performance can be further enhanced by tuning the mesoscopic architectures.

Topology optimization of thin-walled tubes filled with lattice structures

Dongming Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new method to design and optimize the topology of thin-walled tubes filled with lattice structures. The research finds that the cross-sectional configuration and lattice filling distribution have different effects on the crashworthiness of hybrid structures. The crashworthiness of various topologies is ranked using the complex proportional assessment (COPRAS) method, and the optimal solution is selected. Further improvement in crashworthiness is achieved using a discrete optimization algorithm.

Mechanically robust lattices inspired by deep-sea glass sponges

Matheus C. Fernandes et al.

Summary: Computational analysis and mechanical testing have shown that the skeletal system of deep-sea hexactinellid sponges has achieved near-optimal resistance to buckling through evolution. The diagonal reinforcement strategy of the sponge achieves the highest buckling resistance for a given amount of material, and the sponge-inspired lattice geometry approaches the optimum material distribution for the design space considered. Lessons learned from studying sponge skeletal systems can be applied to geometrically optimize square lattice structures to avoid global structural buckling and improve material use in modern infrastructural applications.

Characterisation and modeling of additively-manufactured polymeric hybrid lattice structures for energy absorption

Z. P. Sun et al.

Summary: Lightweight cellular materials and structures are widely used in load-bearing and energy absorption applications due to their favorable mechanical properties. Recent advances in additive manufacturing techniques have allowed for tailored architectural geometries in cellular structures. New hybrid lattice designs combining the advantages of octet and bending-dominated structures show stable post-yield stress plateau without significant sacrifice in stiffness and strength. This study suggests further enhancement of energy absorption performance in lattice structures by appropriately tuning their topological architectures.
