Molecular dynamics study of crystal orientation effect on surface generation mechanism of single-crystal silicon during the nano-grinding process

Pengyue Zhao et al.

Summary: This study used molecular dynamics simulation method to investigate the nano-grinding process of single-crystal silicon workpieces with different surface crystal orientations, and compared the results with experimental results. It was found that while the machined surface quality was similar for workpieces with different surface crystal orientations, subsurface damage, processing force, phase transition, and residual stress varied significantly. Among the three types of workpieces, the single-crystal silicon workpiece with {110} surface crystal orientation showed the best processing effect.

Surface deformation, phase transition and dislocation mechanisms of single crystalline 6H-SiC in oblique nano-cutting

Shuo Zhang et al.

Summary: Compared with conventional orthogonal cutting, this study systematically investigates the oblique nano-cutting of 6H-SiC by tilting the tool at different angles through molecular dynamics simulations. The deformation mechanism, surface deformation, and cutting force variation are studied, and the transition path of amorphization is clarified. Dislocation analysis reveals that basal dislocation systems dominate the behavior, while in oblique nano-cutting, the basal 1/3 < 1 (1) over bar 00> Shockley partial dislocation of 6H-SiC is more activated due to the inclined-cutting-edge-derived shear stress.

Summary: This paper investigates the effects of non-uniform abrasive grains on the deformation and material removal mechanisms of 6H-SiC during nanogrinding using molecular dynamics simulations. The study finds that different sizes of abrasive grains and cutting depths can result in different grinding mechanisms, which in turn affect the plastic deformation of the material.

Structural anisotropy effect on the nanoscratching of monocrystalline 6H-silicon carbide

Zhonghuai Wu et al.

Summary: This paper comprehensively studied the structural anisotropy effect on the nanoscratching of 6H-SiC using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. Different combinations of scratching conditions resulted in significant variations in scratching-induced deformation morphology, activated dislocations, and scratching forces due to the strong anisotropy effect of the material. The basal plane (0001) along < 1100 > direction was identified as the best combination for conducting nanoscratching on 6H-SiC.

Machining mechanism and deformation behavior of high-entropy alloy under elliptical vibration cutting

Dinh-Quan Doan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that both strain and stress are concentrated at the contact area between the workpiece and cutting tool, as well as at the grain boundaries, under both conventional cutting and ultrasonic elliptical vibration-assisted cutting. Molecular dynamics simulation showed that the temperature of the workpiece is significantly higher under UEVAC, which can facilitate phase transformation and make the cutting process easier. Additionally, the deformation behavior of polycrystalline materials is strongly influenced by grain boundaries, and the cutting force under UEVAC decreases with increasing vibration frequency and amplitude ratio.

Effect of tool rake angle on the material removal mechanism transition of single-crystal silicon: a molecular dynamics study

Changlin Liu et al.

Summary: With a decrease in tool rake angle, the material removal mechanism shifts from shear to extrusion, and ultimately no material is removed. The transition from shear to extrusion is greatly influenced by the tool rake angle and workpiece crystal orientation, while the transition from extrusion to no removal is mainly affected by the position of the stagnation region and frictional force on the tool rake face.
