Estimation of sex from cranial measurements in an Australian population

Lauren Swift et al.

Summary: This study presents the first morphometric cranial sexing standards specifically formulated for the contemporary Australian population. The findings indicate that cranial measurements can accurately estimate sex within the Australian population, thereby enhancing forensic practice and casework accuracy across the country.

Sexual dimorphism and ancestral variation in the pectoral and pelvic girdles of modern humans

Daphne R. Hudson et al.

Summary: Discussions on sexual dimorphism in torso shape and pectoral region often overlook its correlation with body size. This study examines two human populations and finds that males have significantly broader pectoral regions, while females have larger skeletal elements in the pelvic region. The results suggest that sexual dimorphism in the pectoral region is not a result of scaling and reflects unique adaptive forces acting on each sex.

Summary: The study validates the accuracy of 3D models generated by photogrammetry for forensic anthropological purposes, showing it to be a reliable and accurate alternative to the more expensive CT scanning approach.
