Capacity degradation mechanism of ternary La-Y-Ni-based hydrogen storage alloys

Xiangyang He et al.

Summary: La-Y-Ni-based alloys have potential as hydrogen storage materials, but their rapid capacity degradation limits their applications. This study investigates the capacity degradation mechanism of these alloys and the effect of the La/Y ratio on their cyclic stability. The expansion/contraction properties of the subunits in the hydrogen solid solution and hydrides lead to lattice strain and pulverization. Adjusting the subunit ratio can decrease lattice strain and improve cyclic stability. The cyclic stability in the electrolyte decreases with a lower La/Y ratio, opposite to the trend observed in the solid/H-2 system. Y-poor and Y-rich alloys are suitable for electrochemical and solid-state hydrogen storage applications, respectively.

Preparation and hydrogen storage properties of single-phase Ce2Ni7-type La-Sm-Y-Ni based hydrogen storage alloy

Xu Zhang et al.

Summary: A LaSm0.4Y1.6Ni10.5Mn0.4Al0.2 hydrogen storage alloy with a Ce2Ni7-type single-phase was prepared and its electrochemical and hydrogen storage properties were investigated. The alloy exhibited promising electrochemical properties, with maximum capacities of 385.8 mAh/g at 0.2C, 356.8 mAh/g at 1C, and a cycling stability of 86.72% at 100 cycles. The hydrogen storage capacity of the alloy was primarily determined by the charge transfer rate, with a capacity of 272.7 mAh/g at 1500 mA/g. The alloy showed irreversible losses in hydrogen storage due to discordant lattice expansion rates of the [A2B4] and [AB5] subunits during absorption/desorption.

Effect of carbon coating on electrochemical properties of AB3.5-type La-Y-Ni-based hydrogen storage alloys

Ran Wu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the electrochemical performance of La-Y-Ni-based superlattice hydrogen storage alloys by coating them with nano-carbons. The results showed that the cyclic stability and high-rate dischargeability of the alloy could be enhanced through carbon coating. The optimal carbon coating content was found to be 0.3 wt%.

Effect of Sm on the cyclic stability of La-Y-Ni-based alloys and their comparison with RE-Mg-Ni-based hydrogen storage alloy

Miao Guo et al.

Summary: The partial substitution of Sm for Y in La-Y-Ni-based alloys improves their anti-corrosion and anti-pulverization performances, thereby increasing cycle life. Compared to (RE0.85Mg0.15)(2)(NiAl)(7) alloys, RE-Y-Ni-based alloys exhibit better crystal structure stability, but worse gas-solid and electrochemical cyclic stability.
