Resistance of Quench and Partitioned Steels Against Hydrogen Embrittlement

Hamdi Elsayed et al.

Summary: Multiphase ultra-high strength steels with retained austenite have great potential in the automotive industry. Quenching and partitioning heat treatment can achieve a good combination of strength and ductility. However, the susceptibility to hydrogen embrittlement limits the use of Q&P steels. This study investigates the influence of Q&P heat treatment parameters on mechanical properties and hydrogen embrittlement resistivity.

Summary: This work focuses on the hydrogen embrittlement problem in advanced high-strength steels used in the automotive industry. Fully parametrized and validated bulk diffusion models are developed to simulate the diffusion behavior of hydrogen molecules, and the role of current density and coatings on permeation time is studied.

Modeling hydrogen dragging by mobile dislocations in finite element simulations

Yann Charles et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the prediction of hydrogen concentration using finite element simulation modeling. It is found that the results are influenced by the considered transport mechanisms. The presence of mobile traps requires modification of the hydrogen transport equation, and an extended model is proposed to simulate the dragging process of hydrogen by mobile traps. The model is applied to evolving trap density with plastic strain and the consequences of trapped hydrogen mobility on diffusive hydrogen repartition are studied, particularly in terms of hydrogen transport acceleration.

Characterization of Hydrogen Diffusion in Offshore Steel S420G2+M Multi-layer Submerged Arc Welded Joint

Michael Rhode et al.

Summary: Increasing the number of offshore wind turbines is a major goal due to limited onshore installation capacity. In this study, the diffusion coefficients for a thick-walled offshore steel grade and its multi-layer submerged arc weld joint are determined for the first time. These coefficients are used to estimate the diffusion time and characterize the waiting time and hydrogen removal heat treatment required to prevent hydrogen-assisted cracking. The results show that the necessary time is strongly influenced by the plate thickness, and the diffusion coefficients should be critically discussed in estimating any waiting time or heat treatment.

Critical verification of the Kissinger theory to evaluate thermal desorption spectra

Andreas Drexler et al.

Summary: The importance of verifying the evaluation procedures according to Kissinger's theory for multiple types of hydrogen trapping sites in advanced high-strength steels (AHSS) is highlighted by simulating theoretical TDS spectra and comparing them with experimental results. It is strongly recommended to apply the Kissinger theory only for the evaluation of single or well separated TDS peaks, with complementary microstructural variation and characterization needed for overlapping peaks.

Impact of skin effect of hydrogen charging on the Choo-Lee plot for cylindrical samples

V. A. Polyanskiy et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the influence of the skin effect when charging metal samples with hydrogen on thermal desorption spectra (TDS). Analytical and numerical methods were used in FEM modeling to identify the causes of errors in determining the binding energies of hydrogen, with the findings showing the appearance of an extra peak on the TDS due to the skin effect. The study also revealed a dependence of activation energy or hydrogen binding energy calculations on the range of temperature rates in which the TDS experiment was carried out.

Local hydrogen accumulation after cold forming and heat treatment in punched advanced high strength steel sheets

A. Drexler et al.

Summary: Hydrogen embrittlement is a critical issue in the application of advanced high strength steel sheets, especially in severe plastic deformation at punched edges. By investigating two industrial AHSS, it was found that hydrogen accumulates in the shear affected zone, leading to the development of a simplified two-zone model to estimate local hydrogen concentration in punched AHSS sheets.

Hydrogen segregation near a crack tip in nickel

A. Drexler et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of severe elastic straining of interstitial lattice sites in front of a crack tip in nickel, which significantly affects hydrogen segregation in the first atomic layers. The hydrogen distribution in the process zone is found to be strongly inhomogeneous with full occupation of free surface sites and volumetric strained sites.
