Experimental study of the influence of dynamic load cycle and operating parameters on the durability of PEMFC

Tiankuo Chu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of different dynamic load cycles on the performance of proton exchange membrane fuel cells, finding that DLC-02 exhibited lower voltage degradation at low current densities, especially in the first 400 hours. The evolution of resistance types and a proposed formula for calculating polarization losses were key findings in distinguishing the sources of voltage loss.

Hojjat Ashrafi et al.

Summary: This study numerically investigated the performance of PEM fuel cells with different gas injection channel designs. The results indicated that the pin channel design achieved the highest current density and output power, with uniform temperature distribution and minimal water production. On the other hand, the parallel channel design exhibited the lowest performance.

Zeynab Abkar et al.

Summary: This research presents a novel and high-performance electrocatalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) by synthesizing N-micro/mesoporous carbon-supported Pt/Co nanoparticles. The prepared electrocatalyst exhibits desirable surface properties and chemical structure, enhancing the ORR kinetic. The ORR performance of Pt/Co-NC-GDE loaded on the gas diffusion electrode shows superior current density and power density compared to Pt/C-GDE, along with higher stability.

Oxygen reduction reaction measurements on platinum electrocatalysts in gas diffusion electrode half-cells: Influence of electrode preparation, measurement protocols and common pitfalls

Nicolai Schmitt et al.

Summary: Recently, half-cell gas diffusion electrode (GDE) setups have been proposed as a promising alternative to rotating-disk electrode (RDE) and membrane electrode assembly (MEA) for testing oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. However, there is a lack of dedicated protocols for reliable electrode preparation and activity assessment in the novel half-cell GDE testing. This study identifies key challenges and develops protocols to address them.

Summary: In this Account, recent advances in synthesizing efficient PGM-free catalysts for proton-exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) were highlighted, with an emphasis on effective strategies to improve activity and stability. The formation mechanism of MN4 active sites and their correlation to catalytic properties were discussed, providing guidance for rational catalyst design. The trade-off between activity and stability was identified as a key challenge in developing efficient catalysts for PEMFCs.

Electrochemical method to quantitate gas transport resistance at immediate vicinity of catalyst surface in polymer electrolyte fuel cells

Shota Katayama et al.

Summary: A new electrochemical method was developed to evaluate gas transport resistance on the catalyst surface in a porous electrode, where the resistance was controlled by the coverage of an adsorbate on the surface. By using the limiting current technique, the oxygen transport resistance on a Pt surface was successfully evaluated through the dependence on CO coverage in the catalyst layer.

Oxygen reduction limited by surface diffusion at a rotating ring-disk electrode

Antonio M. Chaparro

Summary: The oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) limited by surface diffusion is studied using an analytical model that considers electrosorption of dissolved oxygen and surface diffusion of the adsorbate towards a catalyst center for reaction. The model shows that electrocatalysis assisted by the surface transport of intermediates can improve the performance of air cathodes in low-temperature fuel cells and metal-air batteries.

Optimization of cathode microporous layer materials for proton exchange membrane fuel cell

Bing Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of different carbon blacks on the formation of cathode MPL for proton exchange membrane fuel cells was investigated. It was found that single cells prepared with a mixture of Acetylene black (ACET) and Vulcan XC-72R showed promising power generation performance, while replacing Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) with polyvinylidene fluoride hexafluoropropylene copolymer P(VDF-HFP) as a hydrophobic binder led to a decrease in single cell performance. This study provides valuable insights for material optimization of MPL to enhance fuel cell performance.
