Fluid sloshing thermo-mechanical characteristic in a cryogenic fuel storage tank under different gravity acceleration levels

Zhan Liu et al.

Summary: This study establishes a numerical model to simulate fluid sloshing, considering the phase change occurring within the tank. The acceptability of the numerical model is verified through experimental validation and mesh sensitivity analysis. It is found that gravity acceleration has a significant influence on the characteristics of fluid sloshing, and becomes more prominent when the gravity acceleration exceeds 4g(0).

Interfacial mass and energy transport during steady-state evaporation in liquid oxygen storage tanks

Zhongqi Zuo et al.

Summary: The applications of cryogenic storage systems have become increasingly important in the aerospace, hydrogen, and liquefied natural gas industries. This study investigates the temperature distribution in the interfacial region of liquid oxygen and analyzes the impact of Marangoni convection and thermal conduction on evaporation characteristics. The findings suggest that Marangoni convection contributes significantly to the overall evaporation energy.

Summary: Current methods of estimating BOG rates for large-scale tanks are empirical, and new models need to consider liquid thermal stratification for more reliable predictions. The new apparatus quantifies boil-off rates, with observations of pressurisation, transient, and steady-state stages of boiling process.

Quasi-equilibrium evaporation characteristics of oxygen in the liquid-vapor interfacial region

Zhongqi Zuo et al.

Summary: Evaporation is a vital non-equilibrium phenomenon with applications in various phase transition systems. The study designed a visualized and controlled evaporation system using liquid oxygen as the testing fluid, revealing temperature discontinuities and overheating in the evaporating process. The findings suggest existing evaporation theories may lose accuracy in predicting mass flux and temperature jump at cryogenic temperatures.

Validity evaluation of popular liquid-vapor phase change models for cryogenic self-pressurization process

Zhongqi Zuo et al.

Summary: The study proposed a unified multi-phase solver incorporating four typical liquid-vapor phase change models, enabling direct comparison of their performance against experimental data. Pressure prediction was found to highly depend on model coefficients, with different optimization strategies. The energy jump model was inadequate for cryogenic self-pressurization simulations, while the Lee model and the Tanasawa model were proven to be more stable and efficient based on average deviation and CPU consumption.

Michael Baldwin et al.

Summary: The study compiled experimental data on pool boiling of liquid hydrogen, liquid methane, and liquid oxygen. It found that pool nucleate boiling data for all three fluids display considerable scatter, and existing correlations are unable to effectively narrow the scatter. On the other hand, film boiling data show smaller scatter and can be predicted with reasonable accuracy by existing correlations.

Enhancing heat transfer performance of nitrogen condensation on vertical plate with microstructure

Shaolong Zhu et al.

Summary: The condensation process of cryogenic fluid is mainly controlled by film condensation, and microstructure surfaces are utilized to enhance the heat transfer performance of nitrogen condensation. The phenomenon of rivulet at the bottom of the micro fin is observed, indicating that the curved surface structure accelerates condensate drainage. Different micro fin pitches, heights, and structures are compared and analyzed for their heat transfer performances and flow characteristics. The heat transfer coefficient of micro fins with specific dimensions can be up to 4 times higher than that of a flat plate within a certain temperature difference range.
