In-line viscosity identification via thermal-rheological measurements in an annular duct for polymer processing

Qiao Lin et al.

Summary: This study proposes several inverse method strategies for estimating the viscosity of a fluid during an injection process through thermal-rheological measurements. The central axis of an annular duct provides robust thermal measurements that can be correlated to the fluid viscosity. The main advantage of these strategies is that flowrate modulation is not necessary for viscosity estimation.

On-line melt temperature measurements for polymer injection molding through an instrumented annular duct

Qiao Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal behavior of polymer flow in an injection molding machine by testing an instrumented annular duct as a nozzle on the downstream side of the screw-barrel. The results show that the melt temperature decreases during fast production, and the temperature measurements in an annular geometry prove to be robust for process monitoring.

In-process rheological monitoring of extrusion-based polymer processes

Loic Hilliou et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the attractiveness of in-situ rheological measurements during extrusion for monitoring the process, and briefly reviews the benefits of rheology for evaluating filler dispersion in polymer composites, morphology development in polymer blends, and the extent of chemical reaction in reactive extrusion. In addition, in-process rheological tools are reviewed in detail for the conveyed information for each device.
