Risk for post-operative delirium related to comorbidities in older adult cardiac patients: An integrative review

Mary Dioise Ramos et al.

Summary: This integrative review aimed to synthesize specific comorbidities that can contribute to the development of post-operative delirium in older adult cardiac surgical patients. The study identified several comorbidities, including diabetes mellitus, atrial fibrillation, depression, impaired olfaction, pre-existing cerebrovascular disease, pre-existing cardiovascular disease, insomnia, and frailty. The results strongly indicated a link between comorbidities and the development of post-operative delirium in older adult cardiac surgical patients.

Risk factors of delirium after gastrointestinal surgery: A meta-analysis

Xiaoyu Wang et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis study identified risk factors for postoperative delirium in patients undergoing gastrointestinal surgery. The findings provide guidance for nursing staff and surgeons to design and implement prevention programs to reduce the incidence of postoperative delirium.

The DEMS-DOSS study: validating a delirium monitoring tool in hospitalised older adults

Amy Montgomery et al.

Summary: The objective of this study was to evaluate the sensitivity, specificity, and test-retest reliability of the Delirium Early Monitoring System-Delirium Observation Screening Scale (DEMS-DOSS). The results showed that the DEMS-DOSS had high sensitivity and specificity for monitoring delirium in hospitalized older adults.

Delirium in hospitalised adults with acute burns A systematic review

Guy H. M. Stanley et al.

Summary: This study compares patients with and without delirium in adults with acute burns to identify the risks and outcomes associated with delirium. The findings suggest that factors such as ASA score, total body surface area percentage, surgery, ICU admission, and hospital and ICU lengths of stay are significantly associated with delirium in these patients. However, the heterogeneity of the studies and methodological limitations decrease the certainty of the conclusions.

Recurrent delirium over 12 months predicts dementia: results of the Delirium and Cognitive Impact in Dementia (DECIDE) study

Sarah J. Richardson et al.

Summary: This study found that delirium is associated with cognitive decline and an increased risk of new dementia diagnosis, with more episodes and longer duration of delirium leading to worse cognitive outcomes. Delirium may be a modifiable risk factor for dementia and preventive measures could potentially reduce the risk of future cognitive decline and dementia.

Consistent patterns in the inconsistent associations of Insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1), C-Reactive Protein (C-RP) and Interleukin 6 (IL-6) levels with delirium in surgical populations. A systematic review and meta-analysis

Dimitrios Adamis et al.

Summary: Low levels of IGF-1 are significantly associated with postoperative delirium in abdominal surgical samples, high levels of C-RP are associated with delirium in acute orthopaedic and elective abdominal operations, and IL-6 serves as a significant predictor for delirium in various surgical conditions postoperatively.

Development and validation of a risk score for predicting postoperative delirium after major abdominal surgery by incorporating preoperative risk factors and surgical Apgar score

Guan-Hua Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a predictive scoring system for postoperative delirium in patients undergoing major abdominal surgery was developed and validated. The study found that advanced age, arrythmia, hypoalbuminemia, coagulation dysfunction, mental illness or cognitive impairments, and low surgical Apgar score were associated with increased risk of postoperative delirium. The elastic net algorithm showed good discrimination and calibration, indicating the potential usefulness of this system in clinical practice.

Risk Factors for Delirium after Vascular Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Linda Visser et al.

Summary: POD after vascular surgery is a common complication, with various preoperative and intraoperative risk factors contributing to its occurrence. Studies suggest that delirium is associated with longer ICU and hospital length of stay, and more frequent discharge to a care facility.

Postoperative Delirium in Older Patients: A Systematic Review of Assessment and Incidence of Postoperative Delirium

Mu-Hsing Ho et al.

Summary: The study reviewed commonly used delirium assessment tools and estimated the incidence rates of postoperative delirium, finding that the confusion assessment method (CAM) was the most commonly used tool and had a pooled incidence rate of 24%. The findings can provide valuable evidence for clinical practitioners in detecting and managing postoperative delirium.
