The characterization of antimicrobial nanocomposites based on chitosan, cinnamon essential oil, and TiO2 for fruits preservation

Shuai Yuan et al.

Summary: In this study, safe and renewable nanocomposites (CS-T-C) were prepared to preserve fruits. The results showed that the nanocomposites can maximize the fresh-keeping effect through different mechanisms, and they are not cytotoxic. Therefore, the nanocomposites developed in this work might be a good choice for fruit preservation.

INVESTIGATING STRUCTURAL CHANGES OF CHITOSAN-TiO2 AND CHITOSAN-TiO2-ZnO-MgO HYBRID FILMS DURING STORAGE BY FTIR SPECTROSCOPY

Luis M. Anaya-Esparza et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the effect of storage temperature on structural changes in chitosan films functionalized with titanium dioxide and a ternary mixed oxide. Films stored at 25°C showed significant changes after 7 days, indicating dehydration, while those stored at 4°C exhibited reduced changes after 21 days. Migration of TiO2 and TZM from the films to the medium followed a first-order kinetic model with temperature dependency. Further research is needed to correlate structural changes during storage with technological and functional properties of the films.

Chitosan films incorporating litchi peel extract and titanium dioxide nanoparticles and their application as coatings on watercored apples

Zitian Liu et al.

Summary: The addition of nano-titanium dioxide and litchi peel extract improved the mechanical strength, water vapor barrier properties, and thermal stability of chitosan-based films, while enhancing their phenolic content and antioxidant capacity. Coating treatment significantly improved storage quality of watercored Fuji apples, inhibiting respiration rate, weight loss, softening, polyphenol oxidase activity, electrolyte leakage, and malondialdehyde accumulation. The most effective treatment for maintaining cold storage quality was found to be a CS + TiO2+LPE coating, demonstrating promising applications for active food packaging and fruit preservation coating.
