Within-host evolution of a gut pathobiont facilitates liver translocation

Yi Yang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that within-host evolution of gut commensal bacteria plays a critical role in bacterial translocation and initiation of inflammation. Gut microbiota strains can adapt and evolve, affecting their propensity to elicit inflammatory diseases. The changes in bacterial behavior are associated with genetic mutations, altered microbial gene expression programs, and remodelled cell wall structures.

Higher tolerance of predominant Salmonella serovars circulating in the antibiotic-free feed farms to environmental stresses

Yan Li et al.

Summary: The ban on antibiotic-supplemented feed can decrease the prevalence of multi-drug resistant Salmonella, but the persistent presence of these bacteria in the environment is still a concern. Our study found that Salmonella isolates from farms that stopped using antibiotics were still multi-drug resistant and belonged to predominant serovars. Environmental stress assays showed that these serovars were more tolerant to stress conditions. Future policies should focus on identifying and targeting these predominant Salmonella clones.

Summary: This study screened eight multi-drug resistant E. coli strains carrying the cfr gene from a collection of E. coli strains isolated from pigs and chickens in China in 2021. The study confirmed the transfer mechanism of the cfr gene through conjugation and identified two plasmids harboring the cfr gene. Additionally, the study demonstrated the formation of cfr-IS26 circular intermediates in some E. coli strains.

Genome Assessment of Carbapenem- and Colistin-Resistant Escherichia coli from Patients in a Sentinel Hospital in China

Jiangang Ma et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial-resistant (AMR) pathogens pose a significant threat to global public health. The primary carriers of AMR genes, particularly against last-resort antibiotics, in Chinese hospitals have not been thoroughly studied. A study conducted in a sentinel hospital in China collected 157 E. coli strains from patients between January and July 2021. The study identified one bla(NDM-1)-positive, nine bla(NDM-5)-positive, and one mcr-1-positive E. coli strains resistant to meropenem and colistin in hospitalized patients. The study also found various virulence genes and different ST types associated with bla(NDM) and mcr-1 genes. The presence of mcr-1-positive E. coli in a one-day-old child closely related to strains with animal origins is noteworthy. Active monitoring systems at the genome level are necessary to surveil the spread of virulence and AMR genes in hospitals.
