Crustacean polysaccharides for the geotechnical enhancement of organic silt: A clean and green alternative

Govindarajan Kannan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the potential use of shrimp-based chitin and chitosan as soil stabilizers for low plastic silt with organic content. It was found that no new chemical compounds were formed in the soil on additive treatment, but scanning electron microscope analysis revealed the formation of biopolymer threads that enhanced the soil strength and reduced the hydraulic conductivity.

Using ground blast-furnace slag grouts with biopolymer additives for improving sandy soils

Hamidreza Khatami et al.

Summary: The mechanical performance of microfine ground-granulated blast-furnace slag grouts for improving sandy soils was evaluated. The study found that using rapid-hardening cement (RHC) as the activator with modest biopolymer additive and smaller water-binder ratio led to significantly higher strength gains. The RHC activator showed better performance compared to sodium hydroxide, and adding xanthan gum (XG) or diutan gum (DG) improved the strength of grouted sand.

An appraisal of the hydro-mechanical behaviour of polysaccharides, xanthan gum, guar gum and β-glucan amended soil

Subramani Anandha Kumar et al.

Summary: The study found that polysaccharide amended soil can reduce permeability, enhance heavy metal adsorption, and improve soil strength. In particular, xanthan gum amended soil showed the best performance, making it suitable for use as a liner material.
