Enhancement of biogas production from cattle manure using glycerine phase as a co-substrate in anaerobic digestion

Katarzyna Bulkowska et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of glycerine phase on the anaerobic digestion of cattle manure under mesophilic conditions. It was found that the addition of 10% glycerine phase significantly increased biogas production and methane content. Biogas formation was strongly correlated with the concentrations of ammonium nitrogen and volatile fatty acids, and the biogas production decreased over time.

Electrospinning iron-doped carbon fiber to simultaneously boost both mediating and direct biocatalysis for high-performance microbial fuel cell

Xin Sun et al.

Summary: This study innovatively prepared a uniform iron ion-mixed carbon precursor to directly electrospin iron-doped carbon nanofibers as an anode for microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The optimized iron-doped carbon nanofiber anode exhibited significantly improved bio-electrocatalytic performance, resulting in an 8.67 times higher output power compared to the undoped carbon nanofiber anode. The study also revealed that iron-doping promoted the adsorption of mediator flavins for faster electron transfer and facilitated direct electron transfer, boosting both mediation and direct electrochemistry processes.

Modification of Graphite Sheet Anode with Iron (II, III) Oxide-Carbon Dots for Enhancing the Performance of Microbial Fuel Cell

Babita Tripathi et al.

Summary: The present study explores the use of carbon dots coated with iron (II, III) oxide (Fe3O4) as an anode in microbial fuel cells (MFC). Different concentrations of Fe3O4-carbon dots were coated onto graphite sheets, and their performance in MFC was evaluated. The modified anodes showed higher peak currents and fluxes compared to the bare graphite sheet anode, resulting in a significantly improved power density of the MFC. The increased interaction area of carbon dots enhanced the cell attachment capability of the anode, boosting the biocompatibility of Fe3O4@PSA-C.

Microbial profiles associated improving bioelectricity generation from sludge fermentation liquid via microbial fuel cells with adding fruit waste extracts

Junguo He et al.

Summary: The study highlighted the microbial cooperative interactions in generating bioelectricity from a mixture of sludge fermentation liquid and fruit waste extracts using microbial fuel cells. Addition of fruit waste extracts improved microbial diversity and functional gene abundance, enhancing the performance of sludge-fed microbial fuel cells. Moreover, a conceptual colocating scenario was proposed for maximizing solid reduction and power recovery in waste sludge treatment.

Magnesium ferrite spinels as anode modifier for the treatment of Congo red and energy recovery in a single chambered microbial fuel cell

Nishat Khan et al.

Summary: Magnesium Ferrite (MgFe2O4) spinel structures were used as an anode modifier in the microbial fuel cell treatment of Congo red dye, showing improved bioenergy output and electron transfer compared to unmodified stainless-steel mesh anode. Gas chromatography coupled Mass spectrometry system confirmed the formation of metabolites during the treatment process. Electrochemical studies demonstrated the superior performance of the spinel coated anode with enhanced redox activity and high capacitive nature. The study suggested an effective treatment strategy for Congo red dye.
