Shame and binge eating pathology: A systematic review

Elyse O'Loghlen et al.

Summary: Various types of shame, including internal shame, external shame, body shame, and binge eating-related shame, are associated with binge eating pathology, along with multiple mechanisms and pathways. Drawing from research findings, an original, integrated model of the cyclical shame-binge eating relationship is presented in this review. Clinical interventions to break this cycle are discussed, along with methodological weaknesses and important areas for future research.

Motivation for dietary restraint, and disordered eating among adults experiencing food insecurity in the United States

Francesca Gomez et al.

Summary: Does engaging in dietary restraint due to weight/shape concerns versus economic hardship differentially relate to disordered eating? The study found that there is no difference in the association between dietary restraint due to economic hardship and disordered eating compared to dietary restraint due to weight/shape concerns. However, the association between dietary restraint and disordered eating becomes stronger when it is primarily motivated by weight/shape concerns.

Increases in shame following binge eating among women: Laboratory and longitudinal findings

Heather A. Davis et al.

Summary: This study conducted two investigations using different methods, aiming to test the hypothesis that shame increases following binge eating, independent of guilt and negative affect. The results supported the hypothesis, suggesting that shame may mediate the link between binge eating and comorbid psychopathology. Understanding this mechanism can contribute to interventions targeting shame reduction for individuals who engage in binge eating.

Food insecurity & dietary restraint in a diverse urban population

Keesha M. Middlemass et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate self-reported reasons for engaging in dietary restraint in a food insecure urban population and examined the association with eating disorder pathology. The findings showed that individuals engaged in dietary restraint for reasons such as minimizing hunger impacts on family members, stretching food supply, and prioritizing medical expenses, which were correlated with increased eating disorder pathology. The study highlights the importance of assessing dietary restraint beyond weight and shape concerns in food insecure adults.
