Attachment and mentalization as predictors of outcome in family therapy for adolescent anorexia nervosa

Tom Jewell et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the role of attachment and mentalization in predicting treatment outcome for adolescent anorexia nervosa. The findings suggest that parents' excessive certainty about mental states may predict poor treatment outcome, while adolescents' lack of clarity about their own feelings may predict positive outcome. Higher alliance scores at 1 month were associated with positive outcome and attachment security and mentalization.

Attachment, body appreciation, and body image quality of life in adolescents with eating disorders

Isabel Laporta-Herrero et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the association between parental attachment style and body appreciation in adolescents with and without eating disorders, as well as the relationship between attachment, positive aspects of body image, and body image quality of life. The findings suggest that there is a significant link between secure attachment and body appreciation in both groups, and body appreciation is positively related to body image quality of life.

Adult attachment style and salivary alpha-amylase and emotional responses to a psychosocial stressor in women with eating disorders

Giammarco Cascino et al.

Summary: The fine-tuning of the endogenous stress response system is influenced by early attachment relationships, with a higher prevalence of insecure attachment in individuals with eating disorders (EDs). This study investigated the emotional and SNS reactivity to the TSST in women with EDs in relation to their attachment profiles. The findings suggest that adult attachment may be associated with variability in emotional and biological responses to a psychosocial stressor in women with EDs.

Is there an elephant in the room? A study of convergences and divergences of adult attachment measures commonly used in clinical studies

Bernhard Strauss et al.

Summary: This study investigated the convergence of attachment measures in adults and found differences between categorical and dimensional measures in differentiating samples. Moderate to high correlations were found between similar scales in dimensional self-report measures while the convergence of categorical measures was low. Four independent dimensions were extracted, indicating significant differences between different measures.

Attachment insecurity predicts worse outcome in patients with eating disorders treated with enhanced cognitive behavior therapy: A one-year follow-up study

Eleonora Rossi et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role of attachment insecurity in predicting the long-term trends of eating disorder psychopathology and body uneasiness in patients with Anorexia Nervosa (AN) or Bulimia Nervosa (BN) treated with Enhanced Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT-E). The results showed that attachment insecurity predicted a worse longitudinal trend of eating disorder psychopathology and indirectly maintained higher levels of body uneasiness.

Mediating role of depressive symptoms linking insecure attachment and disordered eating in adolescents: A multiwave longitudinal study

L. Cortes-Garcia et al.

Summary: This study explored the relationship between insecure attachment and disordered eating in adolescents and whether depressive symptoms serve as a pathway between them. The findings suggest that insecure attachment to the mother predicts the development of disordered eating in adolescence through increased depressive symptoms, while attachment to the father does not have the same effect.

Obsessive-compulsive symptoms in young women affected with anorexia nervosa, and their relationship with personality, psychopathology, and attachment style

Federico Amianto et al.

Summary: Obsessive-compulsive traits in patients with anorexia nervosa are primarily associated with insecure attachment patterns, rather than their eating disorder or general psychopathology. Therapeutic approaches targeting insecure attachment may be considered for treating anorexia nervosa patients with obsessive-compulsive symptoms. This study supports a new psychopathological perspective for understanding the significance of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in anorexia nervosa.

Duration of untreated eating disorder and relationship to outcomes: A systematic review of the literature

Summary: This systematic review assessed the duration of untreated eating disorder (DUED) across different eating disorders, finding that younger patients have shorter DUED and a shorter DUED may be associated with a greater likelihood of remission. Manipulating DUED by shortening service-related delays can improve clinical outcomes.
