Use of Telehealth in the Management of Adolescent Eating Disorders: Patient Perspectives and Future Directions Suggested from the COVID-19 Pandemic

Sasha Gorrell et al.

Summary: Efforts to increase accessibility of eating disorder treatment via telemedicine have been on the rise, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. This review provides a summary of previous and recent research on remote delivery of interventions for EDs, highlighting the limitations of studies conducted during the pandemic. The findings suggest that there is potential for long-lasting acceptance of remote delivery methods and interest in hybrid care, but future research should focus on replicating studies in non-pandemic contexts and evaluating factors that can improve patient matching for effective and efficient care.

Exploring the experience of young people receiving treatment for an eating disorder: family therapy for anorexia nervosa and multi-family therapy in an inpatient setting

Emily Coopey et al.

Summary: Background research shows that family therapy and multi-family therapy are effective treatments for adolescents with anorexia nervosa. However, little is known about the experiences of young people receiving these treatments in an inpatient setting. This study interviewed five young people receiving treatment on the AN pathway in an inpatient unit, and identified four superordinate themes: 'Process of Understanding', 'Reviving Connection', 'Emerging from the Eating Disorder', and 'Development of I'. The results highlight the importance of both the individual and the role of others in the treatment process, and can inform future service developments.
