Historical trends of degradation, loss, and recovery in the tropical forest reserves of Ghana

Michael C. Wimberly et al.

Summary: This study used Landsat satellite data and remote sensing algorithms to monitor forest degradation, loss, and recovery in forest reserves of Ghana. The results showed an increasing trend of forest degradation and loss, with slower recovery. Widespread fires in 2016 caused significant forest loss and degradation in moist semi-deciduous and upland evergreen forest types.

Forest cover change in China from 2000 to 2016

Jing Guo et al.

Summary: Thanks to favorable afforestation policies, China has become the nation with the largest afforestation area in the world. However, there is a lack of specific distribution maps for forest change at the regional and national levels in China. In this study, Landsat time series images were used to track annual forest changes in China. The results show that forest growth is the major change type in China, with a significant increase in forest area. However, there are also scattered forest losses in some regions.

A new global land productivity dynamic product based on the consistency of various vegetation biophysical indicators

Yuran Cui et al.

Summary: This study proposes a fusion framework that incorporates the trends and consistencies within the four commonly used remote sensing-based vegetation indicators. The results indicate that 23.99% of the global vegetated area is experiencing increasing land productivity, while 7.00% is declining. The study demonstrates the accuracy of using high-confidence (HC) areas to evaluate land productivity changes.

Improved detection of abrupt change in vegetation reveals dominant fractional woody cover decline in Eastern Africa

Temesgen Alemayehu Abera et al.

Summary: While cropland expansion and demand for woodfuel exert pressure on woody vegetation in East Africa, climate change has led to a gain in woody cover. However, the net change in fractional woody cover is unclear. This study reveals that total woody cover loss was much higher than gain, mainly driven by abrupt loss and cropland expansion. The most threatened ecosystem is the Acacia-Commiphora bushlands and thickets.

The expansion of tree plantations across tropical biomes

Matthew Fagan et al.

Summary: Changes in agricultural practices have led to rapid expansion of tree plantations in tropical regions, often encroaching intact forests and grasslands. Satellite imagery was used to classify observed tree cover gain between 2000 and 2012, revealing that both natural regrowth and plantation expansion contribute to increased tree cover across the tropics.

Remotely sensed tree canopy cover-based indicators for monitoring global sustainability and environmental initiatives

Ronald C. Estoque et al.

Summary: With the increasing challenges of global environmental change, sustainability, and biodiversity conservation, monitoring the world's remaining forests has become more crucial than ever. Earth observation technologies, particularly remote sensing, play a vital role in forest cover monitoring worldwide. However, multi-temporal categorical map products have limitations and may not accurately represent forest landscapes. Using remotely sensed tree canopy cover datasets can complement traditional forest/non-forest maps for more accurate forest cover monitoring.

High aboveground carbon stock of African tropical montane forests

Aida Cuni-Sanchez et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the aboveground carbon stock of a montane African forest network is comparable to that of a lowland African forest network, and is two-thirds higher than default values for these montane forests. The research provides country-specific montane forest AGC stock estimates modeled from the plot network, aiming to guide forest conservation and reforestation interventions. The findings emphasize the need to conserve these biodiverse and carbon-rich ecosystems.

Dynamics of deforestation and forest degradation hotspots applying geo-spatial techniques, apalchand forest in terai belt of himalayan foothills: Conservation priorities of forest ecosystem

Biswajit Bera et al.

Summary: The forest cover or health is deteriorating globally due to population growth, agriculture expansion, and infrastructural development, particularly in tropical and sub-tropical regions. The Apalchand forest in the Himalayan terai belt is experiencing increased fragmentation and vulnerable hotspots. The forest condition in 2020 is observed to be more fragile compared to 1988, with areas of Patch and Perforated class significantly increasing.

Three Decades of Land Cover Change in East Africa

Eric L. Bullock et al.

Summary: This study analyzed land cover changes in Sub-Saharan East Africa using satellite observations, finding a significant increase in cropland area and a decrease in woody vegetation. The rapid population growth led to concerns about the conservation of natural ecosystems due to land conversion caused by human activities.
