Prediction of diffuse solar radiation by integrating radiative transfer model and machine-learning techniques

Yunbo Lu et al.

Summary: This study developed and compared five high-speed and highly accurate hybrid models to simulate diffuse radiation in different regions of China. By combining multiple data sources and using various machine learning models, the proposed RTM-RF method exhibited superior performance. The uncertainty caused by the measurement errors of aerosol optical properties and land surface albedo was quantified, and the relative contributions of multiple variables to diffuse radiation were analyzed. AOD, SZA, and single-scattering albedo were found to contribute significantly more than other variables.

Predicting surface solar radiation using a hybrid radiative Transfer-Machine learning model

Yunbo Lu et al.

Summary: Solar radiation is a clean and renewable energy source that affects the carbon sink functions of terrestrial ecosystems. This study developed hybrid models with high computational speed and high accuracy to estimate global solar radiation (GSR) and quantify the impact of measurement uncertainty on GSR simulations. The results showed that the RTM-RF model outperformed other models in terms of computational efficiency and performance, with a mean absolute error (MAE) of 15.57 W m-2 and coefficient of determination (R2) of 0.98. The study supports the use of physical models combined with machine learning models for GSR estimation and provides valuable scientific information for large-area solar radiation estimations.

Understanding and reducing the uncertainties of land surface energy flux partitioning within CMIP6 land models

Kunxiaojia Yuan et al.

Summary: This study combined machine learning and causal inference models to investigate and reduce the uncertainties of CMIP6 simulated evaporative fraction. The results showed that CMIP6 model ensembles overestimated evaporative fraction, but accounting for biases from surface climate and biological driving variables significantly improved the model predictions. Machine learning-based parameterization also showed potential for further reducing model biases.

Quantitative evaluations of subtropical westerly jet simulations over East Asia based on multiple CMIP5 and CMIP6 GCMs

Bingqian Zhou et al.

Summary: The study applied a new self-adaptive algorithm to evaluate the East Asian subtropical westerly jet (EASWJ) using historical experiments from multiple global climate models (GCMs) in CMIP5 and CMIP6. The results showed that while both phase models can simulate the characteristics of winter EASWJ well, there were differences in the simulation results for other seasons, with CMIP6 models tending towards weaker, wider, and more-northward jets compared to CMIP5. Further analysis suggested that the simulated performance of the meridional temperature gradient was important for capturing the EASWJ characteristics.

Estimating global downward shortwave radiation from VIIRS data using a transfer-learning neural network

Dongdong Wang et al.

Summary: This study introduces the concept of transfer learning and applies it to estimate global downward shortwave radiation using a neural network combined with radiative transfer simulations and ground measurements. The proposed method achieves accurate estimates with only top-of-atmosphere and surface albedo inputs. The results show high accuracy in both instantaneous and daily estimates, outperforming traditional ML models and physics models.

Summary: This study compared three potential evapotranspiration (PET) methods in simulating historical and future daily PET levels in South Korea. The PETs estimated using the three methods showed high performance in the historical period. Overall, PETs showed an increase in the future periods, with the PM method showing the greatest increase. This study contributes to our understanding of rational PET methods for calculating hydrological factors in the future using GCM simulations.

Correcting solar radiation from reanalysis and analysis datasets with systematic and seasonal variations

Zia ul Rehman Tahir et al.

Summary: Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) is an important component for assessing solar resource potential, and different reanalysis and analysis datasets were evaluated for their accuracy in estimating GHI. Systematic errors were observed in the estimated GHI, highlighting the need for bias correction methods to improve data quality. Among the bias correction methods used, Model Output Statistics (MOS) showed the best overall performance, followed by linear-adaptation methods. The corrected GHI from certain datasets can be used for initial solar resource assessment.
