APPLICATION OF MUD GAS DATA AND LEAKAGE PHENOMENA TO EVALUATE SEAL INTEGRITY OF POTENTIAL CO2 STORAGE SITES: A STUDY OF CHALK STRUCTURES IN THE DANISH CENTRAL GRABEN, NORTH SEA

H. I. Petersen et al.

Summary: Depleted chalk oilfields and chalk structures in the Danish Central Graben, North Sea, have the potential to be used as CO2 storage sites. This study proposes a workflow that combines mud gas data and seismic data to evaluate the seal integrity of these structures. The results show that mud gas data can provide detailed information about gas distribution, while seismic data can reveal leakage phenomena. Overall, the potential CO2 storage sites in the study area exhibit good seal integrity.

Near equatorial paleoclimatic evolution and control on organic matter accumulation during the Cenomanian in the Abu Gharadig Basin, southern Tethys: Insights from palynology, organic petrography, and geochemistry

Ahmed Mansour et al.

Summary: During the Late Cretaceous, there was a major marine transgression in north Africa, which was interrupted by sea level falls and resulted in the accumulation of organic matter-rich sediments. The Bahariya Formation in northern Egypt was deposited in the Abu Gharadig Basin and characterized by thick alternations of siliciclastic sediments. An integrated approach was used to analyze the organic matter and its paleoenvironmental and paleoclimatic conditions. The results show a warm and humid climate, gas-prone kerogen, and low organic carbon contents in the Bahariya Formation.

Source rock with high abundance of C28 regular sterane in typical brackish-saline lacustrine sediments: Biogenic source, depositional environment and hydrocarbon generation potential in Junggar Basin, China

Shiju Liu et al.

Summary: In the Lucaogou Formation shale in the Jimusaer Sag of the Junggar Basin, organic geochemical and petrological analyses revealed that the source rocks are mainly composed of two types of maceral - lamalginite and telalginite. Both macerals have good hydrocarbon-generating potential, but in the lower thermal evolution stage, telalginite has a higher hydrocarbon-generating rate.

Organic geochemistry of possible Middle Miocene-Pliocene source rocks in the west and northwest Nile Delta, Egypt

W. Sh. El Diasty et al.

Summary: The molecular characteristics and source rock potential of Miocene-Pliocene sediments in the west and northwest onshore/offshore portion of the Nile Delta province were investigated using geochemical proxies. The results show a wide range of organic matter quality in the samples, with a mixed-source input from planktonic-bacterial and land plants. The presence of high bicadinane and 24-norcholestane ratios suggest significant differences in biomarker characteristics due to local facies variations.

Molecular and isotopic evidence for the origin of light oils and associated gases in the onshore northeast Nile Delta

A. Khairy et al.

Summary: This study analyzed oil and gas samples from the onshore Nile Delta, Egypt, to infer their origin, source lithology, depositional environment, and thermal maturity. The results suggest that the natural gases in the onshore Nile Delta are wet-thermogenic in origin and were generated from Type-III and Type-II/III or Type-II kerogen. The condensates, on the other hand, are derived from clay-rich source rocks with abundant Type-III terrigenous organic materials. Furthermore, the condensates from Oligocene and Miocene pay zones exhibit different geochemical signatures, possibly indicating different source rocks or multiple charge systems.
