Physical, Chemical, and Mechanical Properties of Six Bamboo from Sumatera Island Indonesia and Its Potential Applications for Composite Materials

Rudi Hartono et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the physical, mechanical, and chemical properties of bamboo from the FASP Pondok Buluh in Sumatera Island, Indonesia, and identified the best bamboo types for composite materials. The chemical, physical, and mechanical properties varied significantly among different bamboo species, with Dasar Bamboo and Betung Bamboo being the most suitable for composite materials.

Stable polycyclic aromatic carbon (SPAC) formation in wildfire chars and engineered biochars

Alexandra Howell et al.

Summary: Pyrogenic carbon (PyC) is an important component of wildfire chars and engineered biochars. The most environmentally stable fraction of PyC, called stable polycyclic aromatic carbon (SPAC), is projected to persist in global environments for a long time. This study investigates the relationship between SPAC formation and physicochemical metrics, and develops predictive models for SPAC content.

Inclusion of biochar in a C dynamics model based on observations from an 8-year field experiment

Roberta Pulcher et al.

Summary: Biochar production and application as soil amendment is a promising technology for increasing soil carbon sequestration and mitigating climate change. However, there is limited knowledge about the degradation rate of biochar in soil and its effects on native soil organic carbon (SOC) due to a lack of long-term field experiments. This study investigated the long-term degradation rate of biochar in an 8-year field experiment in Italy and modified the RothC model to simulate the dynamics of biochar and SOC degradation. The results showed that biochar degradation can be faster in field conditions compared to laboratory experiments and can contribute to a substantial increase in soil carbon stock in the long term.

Greenhouse Gas Inventory Model for Biochar Additions to Soil

Dominic Woolf et al.

Summary: Stabilizing the global climate requires reducing greenhouse gas emissions and removing CO2 from the atmosphere. GHG accounting protocols are needed to quantify the mitigation impact of CO2 removal practices like biochar sequestration. Research shows that the carbon content of biochar varies with feedstock and production conditions, with a significant portion remaining unmineralized in soil for long-term sequestration.

Biochar in climate change mitigation

Johannes Lehmann et al.

Summary: Climate change mitigation strategies based on biochar generation and its application to agricultural soils can effectively sequester carbon, with trade-offs between biogeochemical and economic considerations. Emission reductions and CO2 removal by biochar systems depend on the energy being replaced, with varying impacts when biochar is used instead of coal or renewable energy sources. Opportunities for increasing crop yields exist with biochar additions, but the trade-offs and relationships among emissions reductions, energy production, and fertilizer responses must be carefully considered for effective climate change mitigation.
