Environmental risk factors and cardiovascular diseases: a comprehensive expert review

Thomas Muenzel et al.

Summary: Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) contribute to 70% of global mortality, causing more than 38 million deaths annually, with cardiovascular disease (CVD) being the leading cause. Environmental stressors such as air pollution, noise, artificial light, and climate change, including heat extremes and natural disasters, are strongly associated with the risk of NCDs.

The role of magnetic fields in neurodegenerative diseases

Javier Riancho et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases encompass a range of disorders affecting the nervous system, such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, with most cases resulting from the interaction of genetic predisposition and environmental factors. There is ongoing research into the potential risk of electromagnetic field exposure for neurodegeneration, although a clear correlation has not yet been demonstrated. Additionally, electromagnetic radiation is being explored as a potential non-invasive therapeutic strategy for certain neurodegenerative diseases.

Analysis of incidence of air quality on human health: a case study on the relationship between pollutant concentrations and respiratory diseases in Kennedy, Bogota

Nidia Isabel Molina-Gomez et al.

Summary: Forecasting factors that pose risks to people's health and their geographical distribution could prevent thousands of deaths associated with air pollution each year. By analyzing the primary socioeconomic and environmental conditions causing symptoms associated with respiratory diseases, geostatistical and machine learning tools were used to identify hot spots for potential RD occurrences. The application of these tools allows municipalities to anticipate environmental health situations and reduce the cost of respiratory disease treatments, particularly in densely populated areas with high levels of air pollution.

Impact of temperature on hospital admission for acute lower respiratory infection (ALRI) among pre-school children in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam

Hieu K. T. Ngo et al.

Summary: Changes in ambient temperature have significant impacts on hospital admissions for acute lower respiratory infections among children under 5 in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. A 1 degree C increase in maximum temperature was associated with increased hospital admissions during both dry and rainy seasons, while a rise in diurnal temperature range was unexpectedly linked to a decrease in admissions among younger children during the rainy season. Factors such as age, exposure time, air conditioning use, clothing, socioeconomic status, and behavior can also influence the effects of high temperature on hospital admissions in this population.

Understanding the effect of climate change in the distribution and intensity of malaria transmission over India using a dynamical malaria model

Shweta Chaturvedi et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to quantify the spatio-temporal malaria transmission intensity over India using the VECTRI dynamical malaria model. The likely effect of climate change on malaria transmission intensity in different parts of India is also investigated. It is shown that the maximum number of malaria cases over India occur during the Sept-Oct months, whereas the minimum during the Feb-Apr months, and that the malaria transmission intensity and length of transmission season over India is likely to increase in the future climate due to global warming.
