Reinforcing Poly(methyl methacrylate) with Bacterial Cellulose Nanofibers Chemically Modified with Methacryolyl Groups

Hiroyuki Kono et al.

Summary: In this study, nanofibrillated bacterial cellulose (NFBC) was successfully used as a nanofiller to improve the mechanical properties of poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) while maintaining its high transparency, through chemical surface modification. The addition of only 0.10 wt% of NFBC increased the tensile strength and Young's modulus of the composite by factors of 1.6 and 1.8, respectively, without sacrificing the maximum elongation rate. Interaction involving the organic functional groups of the surface-modified NFBC was found to be crucial for reinforcing PMMA.

Three-dimensional porous sodium alginate/gellan gum environmentally friendly aerogel: Preparation, characterization, adsorption, and kinetics studies

Kaiqiang Dong et al.

Summary: In this study, three-dimensional porous sodium alginate/gellan gum aerogels were prepared and used for the removal of methylene blue in wastewater. The addition of gellan gum improved the chemical resistance and adsorption capacity of the aerogels. Kinetic and isothermal models were used to describe the adsorption process of methylene blue. Thermodynamic analysis showed that the adsorption of methylene blue was spontaneous and exothermic. After multiple cycles of adsorption-desorption, the adsorption capacity of the aerogels only slightly decreased. This study demonstrates that SAG aerogels can be effectively used for the removal of methylene blue in wastewater.

Green Synthesis of Hierarchically Porous Alginate/ZIF-8 Composite Beads for Water Treatment

Yingjie Chen et al.

Summary: The immobilization of powdery metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) in a porous matrix is a promising approach for practical applications. In this study, porous alginate/ZIF-8 composite beads were synthesized using a green method, with ZIF-8 grown in alginate hydrogel beads and subsequently freeze-dried using only water as the reaction solvent. The hierarchically porous structure of the composite beads, consisting of macro- and meso-pores in the alginate matrix and micro-pores in the immobilized ZIF-8, enables enhanced adsorption properties. The adsorption performance of the composite beads towards water contaminants was evaluated using methylene blue as a probe molecule. The growth time of ZIF-8 was found to significantly influence the adsorption performance, with a maximum calculated adsorption capacity of 628.93 mg g(-1) at 298 K for ZIF-8@Alg30. The adsorption process followed the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm model, and thermodynamic studies revealed that the process was spontaneous, endothermic, and irreversible.
